    Hi there

Apparently the front number plate issue will be raised again. Saw a snippet on the Channel 7 News today at lunchtime. Not sure if that affects all states but I'm in VIC.

F#@*ed if I'll be drilling holes in any of my front fenders!!!!

    Cheers

you can blame the authorities all you like but perhaps the real blame lies at the feet of the small minority of riders who flaunt speed cameras knowing they cant be caught  ....

Last time this was raised they tried to get around the "front plates are dangerous issue" with a "we are testing stickers to be put onto the fairings".

When it was pointed out that a LOT of motorbikes don't actually have fairings (or have ones designed to be removable like mine) they couldn't come up with anything other than "fit a bracket"...

Duh... weren't dangerous brackets the problem your dodgy sticker idea meant to stop?

Yes, the Nanny State head honchos are at it again, desperate to raise more "revenue" under any pretext. I agree there is a tiny % of absolute morons who misuse the lack of front number plates to get away with speeding and give a bad name to all of us. Just the other day, watching a rider on P plates weave in & out like a maniac in peak hour traffic in Nepean Hwy, I seriously wondered if he will even live to get his full licence.

I attach a copy of notice I sent to the Victorian Transport Minister - does anyone else agree

    **********************************************************************

    The Hon. Terry Mulder MP
    Minister of Transport,Victoria
    GPO Box 2797
    Melbourne Vic 3000
    Friday, August 31, 2012

    Dear Mr Mulder,

RE: Objection to Possible Changes in Victorian Law relating to Motorcycles

I am a long time motorcycle rider (40 years) and I feel that I must lodge my strong protest to what I perceive to be draconian measures being considered by the Victorian State Government.

Firstly, the issue of Hi-ViS clothing for motorbikes being made compulsory.

At vast expense I have attired both myself and my pillion partner in the best of motorcycling protective clothing, including leathers, protective gloves, indestructible lined trousers, boots etc. I do not believe that there is the necessity to change purely due to unsubstantiated claims by a government department to do so. There appears to be no conclusive documentation that this measure would save lives. To be honest I believe that a louder motorcycle is more of a safety measure than bright clothing.

Secondly, the issue of front number plates for motorcycles.

To even consider this move makes my blood boil. Do we really want to be out of step with the rest of the world. I believe that it is not a safety measure, in fact it could lead to being a safety problem in the event of an accident. As this is obviously an effort solely to capture speeding motorcycles then better efforts should be made by the authorities to adjust their speed cameras accordingly. To force front number plates on motorcycles would be another wasteful effort in a vain attempt to display to the non-motorcycle public that you are attempting to reduce the motorcycle road toll. The costs of manufacturing plates, brackets and installation costs are not warranted. Some motorcycles are not suitable for the placement of front plates.

Thirdly, the issue of ‘Cheese Grater” cable barriers.

It is to my utter dismay that the roll out of these barriers still occurs. In the event of an accident I would much prefer to be forced to slide along an Armco barrier or even take my chances with the countryside. These barriers can only cause severe injuries to motorcyclists (shearing off legs etc if slid along) or they could act as a trampoline projecting the motorcycle back into the line of traffic. This should stop immediately until proper testing is done with regards to motorcycle safety. They may be suitable for other vehicles but not for motorcycles. Are we to be the forgotten travelers again?

We, in Victoria, pay a levy to be used to improve motorcycle safety and training.
Please ensure that this levy is used correctly to train motorcyclists and other motor vehicle drivers.

All of the above measures do not improve the safety aspect for motorcyclists, instead they appear to be draconian measures introduced without proper thought, consultation or management.

I implore you to take regard of my objections to ensure that we do not become a ‘nanny’ state and impose unrealistic measures on motorcyclists. As a group we enjoy our motorcycle travel but do regard the Government as having another agenda that is not suited to our needs.

Kindly take my objections into consideration when planning changes to motorcycle laws.

I don't think it will end up here in the West. The govt here invested very heavily in the newer front/rear camers to ping us all.  Semms like they are getting a heap of revenue out of that. They are also going the route of fixed cameras like you have in Vic.

Seems to me like some moron didnt' think of motorcycles when they bought front reading cameras, now they're trying to blame the motorcyclist for their stuff up. Boneheads.....

Why cant they just turn the cameras around, myself I don't care if the cameras are there, if you don't speed you don't get caught.

In the seventies I had a front number plate and it looked like shit, best thing was when they removed them :-)
