Tonight I discovered the best solution yet for the best exhaust sound on the RK - No mufflers at all.

Took off the mufflers and fired it up; sounded much better already. Took it for a spin through the neighbourhood and it sounded good on the move as well.

Sounded very much like the great sound I used to get from my Dyna with Sonic mufflers.

Now all I have to do is locate some chrome turndown exhaust tips to finish it off; probably tips with 1-3/4" inlet and 2" outlet so that it blends in with the exhaust shield diameter.

Save yourselves a lot of cash fellers - you don't need mufflers at all.

Try it and see for yourself

At no point did I say that the exhaust is very loud. It's comparable to the sound from the Sonics on my Dyna and, believe me, they were not as loud as most of the guys that I know who ride Harleys. I know very well how obnoxious an exhaust can be when it is too loud; many times I've been sitting outside a cafe or restaurant when a very loud Harley powers past and remember the virtual pain that it gave my ears.

Anyway, I've done some more research and found, from the S&S exhaust tuning videos, that having some baffling is better for a more practical power distribution because it helps cancel out the sonic pulse that tends to travel back up the exhaust tubes and affect the evacuation of exhaust gases. The longer exhaust system also helps with getting more usable power in low to mid range.

I've decided now to rebiuld my Sonic 2" baffles (louvered and restrictive) using 2" perforated 409 stainless tube from De Filipo Performance Exhaust.
