I'd like to hear of people's personal experience with Screamin Eagle's 255 cam's? Did you feel a noticable increase in Torque & HP? Are you happy with them?

I've come across a set including pushrods for $350, i'm thinking this is pretty good money? My bike is a 2011 FXST with SERT, Spear air filter & Big Radius two into two pipes. My general riding RPM range is between 2800 to 5000 RPM & i'm looking for a cam to suit this.

In a year or so i'm planing on doing a full upgrade to a Stage 4 103 ci kit. I'm trying to decide whether this cam upgrade will give me a noticebale increase in Torque & HP to tied me over until I step up to the 103 ci kit in 12 plus months.

I know very little about cam's so any information would be greatly aprreciated!

    Cheers, Spero..

Several of my mates have had the SE 255 Cams fitted to 103 ( stock ) cube dressers

I then worked the TTS magic on all of them and they're well happy with the performance lift for the money outlay

None have had them " officially Dyno'ed " other than the "Butt Dyno" but all are impressed !

They're a "no dramas" cam to install which makes them doubly attractive for most folks.

I have installed quit a few of these on customer's request. IMO there are other cams available. Yes, they come on early, but at the sacrifice of dying early. 5000 is a generous number. The selling point of these is they bang down at 2000. Paying attention of how I ride. I don't get on the throttle until I am atleast 2500. Cruising down the highway at 3000 is when I want roll on, pass a truck power. The heat soaked hot starts seem to take a toll on comps, ring gears, and starters. If you like SE, 204, 254, and if we go aftermarket the list is loooong.

Price might be the factor, and I don't know aus. $. Not trying to say the cam is bad, cause there are many that do love it. And I do realize some of my customers never see over 4500. Just ging something to think about.

I would look at the SE204 if you want it to pull to 5 K. The 255 works great in a heavy bagger or trike where you want the torque to help move it at lower revs from 1800 to 4500 RPM. The lighter FXST would love the SE204 as it will give you plenty of grunt of the bottom and pull well past 5000 RPM.

There's better cams available aftermarket but it looks like your sticking with HD cams for warranty ?

I was going to go with a 583 from S&S but on the S&S site its says its a match for SE ? is this not true and if not why would S&S put it on their site?

Andrews 57h would be the cam off choice for a softy of dyna and
    Andrews 48 for a bagger
if its just a cam change

IMO the comparison S&S does to other cams is more general. Some cams hit early, some mid, and some late. S&S 583 and 255's are pretty close in numbers. That's why that comparison chart is helpful when picking base cals.

Cheers for your info Hardtail, it's much appreciated!

When i'm riding I don't like to be under 2800RPM in any gear & prefer to be sitting around 3000RPM. 80% of the time i'm changing up a gear around or a bit over 4000RPM, but want a cam that's going to pull until at least 4500RPM. If i'm really giving it some stick for shits & giggles i'll hold it open to just over 5000RPM.

I'm really looking for a cam thats going to come on strong around 2700-3200RPM & pull to at least 4500RPM, what would you recommend?

Hmmm i'm real keen to hear how you go with the 583 cam's, I was looking into a set of these before the 255's cam up at a good price!

Ando, do you know what RPM the 255's stop working so to speak?

The reply to individual messages doesn't seem to be working, or i'm hitting the wrong reply button. Hopefully the guys that have shared info will get my reply's.

I'm really looking for a cam that's working from around 2700 - 3200RPM that will pull to at least 4500RPM. After todays ride I reckon I spend 80% of the time within these RPM ranges with gear changes generally around 4000RPM or a little over. When I feel the urge to give it some stick or trying to outrun mates i'll push it out to just over 5000RPM.

From what the Screamin Eagle catalogue had to say & my local HD guy I thought the 255's were a pretty good choice, an even better choice for $350 plus pushrods! I know a mate that's got a set of 259's & I think he has a set of 204's as well...

    Thanks again for everyone's info..

To me you need a cam with a 38 to 42* intake closing and a duration of around the 240 mark

Hey Ando, cheers for your reply! Any chance you could give me a mugs version of what you just said as i've got no idea what your talking about?? ie: what cam would be closest to the specs you've just outlined?

    Thanks mate..

Hey Hogbag, have you used the 204's in any of your bikes? Or do you have any mates that have?

    Cheers, Spero..

Spero, bang for your buck just go straight past 255 to the 204. Both bolt in without needing major work and the 204's will run a lot cooler in summer. Most people install the 204 because they sound tits and have a nicer top end.

IMHO if you are going stage 4 save your money and wait.
