Screaming eagle tuner do I really need it?

    Hi

I'm currently riding an 2011 iron 883 with a number of mods including a screaming eagle exhaust. On Saturday I  installed a K&N high flow filter which I purchased from a company called Figure engineering in the US. The intake looks great and gave reasonable power increase and making the bike sound a little louder than usual.

A mate who is a car mechanic (who also rides harleys) said that the original computer should compensate for the additional oxygen intake, and at worst overfuel causing the occasional backfire.

However, the bloke at the dealership told me that must install a screaming eagle tuner ASAP as I am running the risk of damaging the engine and burning out the rings.

Are the dealer's comments fair? or is this just another ploy to extract another $600 of my wallet?

A tuner is a good idea as your bike will be running very lean. The SE tuner is a good piece of kit especially if you have the cable kit & software, there are other tuners out there though. The XiED leads from Nightrider are a cheap option too, only $100, they will richen your mixture up.

    Slap.

    Thanks slapster.
If i was running the bike for a few weeks without the tuner - Can running lean damage the engine in the short term?

Put it this way if it was my bike I'd be sorting it asap. I'm no mechanic but running real lean can't be any good for your motor. These bikes already run fairly lean in stock form.

Now how bout a pic of that new intake...

Oh yeah, nice, I looked at that one a while back. Similar to the Joker intake.

    BTW welcome to the forum.
