Abnormal tyre wear

I have just had to replace my rear tyre due to the edges being scalloped/ feathered.

The tyre was an avon venom on the back of my 2006 Softail deluxe and only had about 2000kms on it.

It still had a heap of tread on it and had been a great tyre until now. Plenty of grip.

What could cause this. Anyone have an idea?

    Cheers

     Under-inflated maybe!

Do you have a pic of it? Was it the leading edge of the tread pattern or the trailling edge (if you can remember)? It may be a pressure issue or could be dampening issue with ya shocks?
Also good to know if you were carrying any extra weight.
Did it start scalloping from new or only the last legs of its life?
Just keep an eye on the new tyre before it destroys itself cos you could have a stuffed shock.

I dont have a pic of it. It wasn't under inflation as I keep a good eye on my tyre pressure.

I'll have a look at what edge it was. No extra weight except for the fat bloke riding it.

Nothing has changed with my riding but a mate has the same tyre and it is worse than mine.

I'll check the shocks and keep an eye on the new tyre. Its a bridgestone this time.

I never had a problem when i was running the dunlops only the avon.

    Cheers for the replies

Such a pity the shocks aren't adjustable for the different grades of tyre, and the problem is as the shocks start to wear the damping gets quite a bit softer, less rebound, less compression, the tyre sees the effect. You can adjust pressure to compensate a tiny bit but just keep an eye on the new tyre. Poor rebound, especially on the front, is evident by the leading edge of the tread pattern being raised. Incorrect tyre pressure has differrent characteristics on different parts of the tyre so if at all possible post a pic or a diagram of tne tyre.
Lots of factors to consider tho, air temp, tyre temp, weight, and where/how you ride.

I run the Avons and have 3000 km on them so far and they still look like new. I do go easy on them though...
