Hey guys, New member on the Gold Coast here.. I have a jap bike at the moment and have it up for sale and want to get on a Harley.. been riding for donkeys years and had everything from MX bike to an Oz trike, but no harley yet.. I have been a member of other bike forums and know its the place to get some answers , so help me out.

I took a Road King for a test ride the other day and decided this is the way I want to go.. Road King, Heritige , Wide glide etc.. want to do a bit of touring and also take it to the shops.... The King was nice but it had a few faults like the lower fork legs were a pocked marked and the paint on the fluid housings were flaking.. its 2007   27 thou ks  and $22 grand .. whatya think?? got v&H pipes burly bars sissy bar and rack etc..had a look around and think I can do better price wise.. I want a spectacular condition bike as I really look after them and love it shiny as a pin! No sure if the age thing is an issue so dont mind going back a few years.. is there any model/age/ that I should look out for??

    Thanks in advance.. Scorpio...

welcome , but fair dink , I would say that ANY secondhand bike will have some sort of blemish if you want to be completely anal ......

My advice squint a little  if something so fuckin minor bothers you.

in fact i really dont understand your question at all .... just how the fuck are you going to keep it pristine as you describe unless you never ride the damn thing and it lives in a fuckin climate controlled plastic fuckin bubble in your lounge room ?

BTW whatever you do DONT buy anything with Chrome , particularly chrome spoked wheels - you , my friend, will have a coronary once it starts flaking.

*insert smilie who's bark is worse than bite here*

I have been looking at brand new bikes and second hand bikes.  the 2nd hand bikes i have seen at the harley shops have been pristine so that bike u mentioned sounded a bit rough.

i say keep looking for a minty second hander that didnt leave the garage much with lower kilometres and pay a little more, or just buy brand new and the finance for the extra 6 or 8 grand which will only be $30 a week extra. I think its well worth the extra small payment per week for a brand new bike.

because its going to be your first harley, it doesnt get any better than being the first owner of a mint new 2012 or 2013 model.

goodluck with ya search.  the tourer range is also a great pick with plenty of talent in that lineup. (to save some $$$ pick up a 2012 model cheaper when the 2013 models hit the showrooms soon).

Gee thanks guys, thanks for the welcome... BTW I am not anal and certainly intend to ride the bugger, but want one in good enough condition to start with then I can maintain that level and accesorize!..
Looked at a few and trying to decide narrowed it down to...
    Road King
Heritage softail.. which seem to be a little cheaper.. why?
and have seen a fat bob dressed up like a cruiser with the bags and screen etc..
must be a 6 speed, and would love it to have the pipes done already etc.. and have figured 2007 to now .. price range 20 to 26 k
any other input?? is one engine better than the other 1450 v 1584?? fuel econ ?? Took the road king for a ride and loved the handling .. is there much difference betwen models?? I am asking you guys cause your the experts and the only stupid question is the one you didnt ask before spending yr hard earned!

    Hi Scorpio,

    Welcome to the forum.

You local Harley dealer should have an 'open day' every six months or so, where you can book in and go for a ride on a range of different Harleys, no obligation. That's what I did, I booked myself in to ride the whole lot ! After that I had a fairly good idea what type of Harley suited me, for ride comfort, looks etc. In the end I just kept my eyes open for an 'evo' model custom softail in good condition. Very happy with my purchase,

Ok Guys, I have taken on all your comments, even the somewhat harsh ones, I have done heaps more research and now have some 'serious questions'
I have narrowed it down to Road Glide, Electra Glide Standard, Heritige Softail, Wide Glide, Has to be a 'bagger' meaning I want panniers, but not necessarily a top box.
I must say Road King Classic is at the top of the list. I am looking at everything 2009 onwards. Am I right in saying that everything 2009 onwards had the new frame and wider swingarm to take a bigger tyre??
Also wanted to ask , do all these models listed have Cruise Control, not really sure about the Heritige. I know the road king and the glides do..
Having ridden the six speed I am sold on that option too....
Do thes bikes have a security system as standard. Ignition isolator? Alarm?

Mate you need to harden up. Don't take things so personally. If you cant take a bit of shit you're in the wrong place. And dont....ever.... use the word accessorise. Unless your talking about matching your handbag with your saddle bags. It's customising or modifying.

Good luck with your search, all these qustions are probably easier to be answered by the HD dealer you're looking at buying from because when looking at a used bike the previous owners may have made changes that don't come standard. As far as buying a pristine bike to keep it pristine, we all love our bikes but the dirt and dings are just part of the journey. Buy a new one and start your own if you're that worried about it. I guess it's just a question of are you out there to ride or look pretty?

Don't worry about them Scorpio!! We all have to go through it! :) Sometimes we forget that we were once asking the same questions LOL!!

Welcome to the forum mate. There are plenty people here to help you with the info you need. :)

Depending how patient you are, as Choppaweeza has stated, consider an import. He will look afte the entire thing from start to finish. If you can wait, might be worth having a chat to him.

I like you want a good looking ride, and I am pretty anal about keeping it clean. I have copped plenty of stick for it too, but I don't give a shit - that's the why I am. :)

I am not sure about the cruise, but I am pretty sure that all bikes sold through the Aussie dealers have the alarm.

Easy way to tell if the bike is from an Aussie dealer or has been imported is by the purple sticker, or the VIN. VIN starting with HD1 (in these later year models) was sold in the USA for the domestic market. All the bikes from the Aus dealers start with HD5. HD5 is the VIN code for International dealers - as in - not for sale in the USA.

    Hope that helps brother.
    Cheers

Cheers fella's.. I Look at an 2012 road king today for 28g But really only want  about 09 to get the larger frame.. I will get a ride soon.. my missus has promised it for a 55th birthday pressy.. my head is spinning from details and specs as i want to make sure I get what I want to stick with.. Dya rekon a heritige with a cruise control would compare to a road king, I cant really see much other difference other than spoke wheels and leather bags, seat and studs.. etc...anyway.. cheers for your input

Just think of cleaning when you look at spoke wheels.

Ok Guys want some feedback.. I can get a reasonable deal on a 2010 Ultra Limited with the 103 motor with about 40,000ks  stage 1 kit, seems good, Decided I wanted to go full dresser etc the CVO's are just too much bit the limited seems to be just a bit diffent than the classic but nicely done.

Welcome Scorpio, I'm a newbie myself. I didnt ask many questions, jumped in the deep end, bought the first bike I looked at and amazingly still ended up with a sweet ride for a great price! Right place and right time. I bought a 1978 FXS Lowrider with all the goodies already on it for well under 10grand. I have since had to learn a lot and a lot more to learn. If I had to do it again knowing what I know now, I would still buy an old shovel anyday!
