STAGE 1,2,3!! I don't get it

OK! I'll just come out and admit it... I have no idea what this means at all!

I understand the concept of building, towards better parts for your bike so it breathes better and gets rid of waste exhaust gas more efficiently BUT..

Is there an official STAGE 1, an official STAGE 2, or simply a bunch of brands who make products that are considered STAGE1 & 2?

What defines which stage it is? who decides? how is it decided?

Can some guy in a workshop make an air filter and say "this thing moves more air than a jumping castle..I'll say it's a...stage 5!" and he puts it on the market? who decides?

Can you make a complete STAGE 1 bike; complete with AC, and (V,X) IED, and pipes? Or is it only to do with AC's and IED's?

    Help me, I'm stupid!

Stage one usualy , air filter , exhaust and tuner , stage 2 . Stage one plus high comp pistons, mild head work and drop in cams , stage 3 ,plus full gas flow on heads with big valves and 3 or 5 angle valve seats , high lift cams bigger injectors , as a rough outline , hope this helps

I think the whole "stage" thing is very broad in interpretation !
There are no rules, just decide what you actually want to gain, and how much you want to spend.

    Thanks all!
What a damn good set of responses. Nice and accurate too. It certainly cleared it up for me. I had always wondered, and now I know.

Stage 4 on that link, slapster, sounds like it's fit to send into orbit.

I think my neighbours already are a little cold on my early bike starts as is..( And I'm as considerate as possible)

All this said and done.... are any of you lot sitting on stage 1 or higher? Considered it?

Funny, but first thing that comes to mind when some one mentions "Stages" is how many thousands of dollars.

I'm about to pick up a new bike in a week or so. 2010 XL883N with Stage 1 AC, V & H short shots, (unbaffled) and a SE Super Tuner, and that's been dyno'd. I tried to read up on IED's, but got lost with (X)IED (V)IED, etc.. didn't know when they used which unit with which model etc. But I understand that stage 1 costs a little dough. That and that the Super Tuner apparently does more than adjusting fuel, and pipe heat output, but that it adjusts Torque curves on the fly, and all round general performance of air /fuel..etc, which makes it a little more sought after than a fuel adjustment inline plug in only. But I'm still learning.

It's something that I understood was highly valued, but didn't understand how they defined the stages.

Is a Dyno simply a visual representation of the performance on paper, handed to you, so you can do as you please with the info... or do they actually make the tuning adjustments required for better performance?
As in, are they nerd with computers, or nerds with spanners... hahaha :P

UG, they won't dyno it, they will just flash in the "stage 1" map! Personally the stage 1 map is way too rich and nowhere enough timing. I have the same mods, making 64.5hp and I get 180-200k's around town, and 270 on freeway. After its run in find somebody who "knows" how to tune and not just flash in premade maps.

There is a reason why the CEO of hd aus doesn't use the dealers to tune his own bike...
