To Dyno Or Not, this is the question

I have finally decided that the SE204 series cam is the way I'm going to go with my bike, and it's intended riding/travelling conditions.

So it'll have SEHB - V&H Bigshot staggered and the SEPRT with the 204's going in at first service.

Frasers in Poith is where I purchased the bike, and they'll fit all the bits at first service as part of the deal, except I'll coff up for the cams, no problems.

I speak to the Service Manager and his advice was to not Dyno the bike and flog a new motor (flog ha?) but they already have a pile of downloads that they can just load input into the SEPRT and road test to make sure no decel backfiring (leaning) or flat spotting on accel. Now I don't have a real problem with this, allowing the bike runs true, the exhaust will also be a giude to how the tune is, with any discolouration around header ends and sooty openings. I still would have though that the best way to tune it in to each specific bike is to Dyno it, why would the have to flog it? I thought you'd use progressive throttle in 8 or so positions on Accel and the same on decell to check for correct air - fuel mix.

Any thoughts out there or anybody had any similar experiences, should I push and get it dyno'd maybe somewhere else to confirm its getting the best air - fuel mix. I'm not chashing to see if it increased the HP as I know it will have, and being an ex Jappa rider, it's never going to have the brutal power/performance my old bike had (That's why I got of it and onto a Cruiser) but a nice flat torque curve is what I'm after for two up overtaking.

i had mine run on a dyno last week. watched most of the runs and there were many, progressive throttle position for each cylinder and resultant adjustment.
Apart from reaching high into the rev range I wouldn't say it was flogged as such.

Maybe they have a map that will work just great for you. Give it a go and if your not happy then think about a dyno run.
You do need to find some one that knows what they are doing to get the best result however

Who and why did you have yours done Oz? Have you noticed a difference, was it for performance part installment or re-tune.

    Cheers,

I'm in Qld mate so not much help to you. Pro Cycel did the work. Not cheap on top of the unit cost but very thorough and great outcome.
It was a remap from the supplied map with a dyno jet module. Many speak highly of the unit supplier and his maps and follow up service but that wasn't my experience.
All I wanted was for it to run the way it should and the performance would be what it should be for a street daily ride. I have no interest in what maxium HP it could make.
Very noticeable change. Way smoother and responsive. Often changes don't come up to expectations but this one did for me.

I still think if they are doing the work and offer a map with it go fo it and see how things are.

Cheers OZ, thanks for the feedback, I'm happy to run with it out of the box so to speak, my Jappa was a different stroy that had the PC5 and engine mods (Fuken Flew, but anyway) I'm new to HD, so just seeing what the majority do/feel. If no backfiring and no discolouration of the pipes, I'll run with it for a while I guess.

Cheers Quack, is the shop called Bunbury Dyno or something else? I was thinking about having a word to the boys at Thunder Tech in Mundaring, a bit closer to home for me, but Bunbury's not far. Nice pick up in the torque curve. Thats what I'm after, the bikes 300+ add me the missus and weekend gear, fuck me if I can get 6+ Nm of torque that's a big bonus, especially for the overtaking.

    Thanks lads.

I had my 48 with Fred at procycle on Monday after I fitted pipes & air cleaner.

We used a power vision to flash the ecu as there is no room on a 48 for a piggy-back system

I wasn't after all out power just ride ability. I knew there would be an improvement but what I got is amazing.

Fred is very thorough and the results are incredible.

Dyno run and tune on each throttle position site on the map for both front then rear cylinder.

And yes the map for the front and rear cyl is different. Something you most likely won't get with a canned map.

All I can say is my experience with Fred is top rate and my 48 is a totally different bike to ride.

    Very happy

Didnt think HD had a generic map for the newer bikes and 204's. When i did mine i had to use a se203 map and tune it. Things might have changed since then.

Post dyno tune update - Got back from 550km ride after dyno tune at Procycle. Before tune the new pipes & air cleaner meant it was running lean. After tune with fuel added to the map I still get the same km's from a tank. I guess the better running engine means less twist of the wrist for the same result.

Samford Valley, Mt Mee, and all over the Sunshine coast Hinterland. Pulled over twice for booze & license check, got hassled for rego label attached to the front of the side mounted number plate. "must be visable from the left". Even though he was standing on the left & could see it only had a week left on it. WTF!!

I'm taking my Bob in to Procycle tomorrow to get service and Dyno. I'm after rideability first and foremost, anything else is just a bonus.

He said his mate just bought a blacked out 48 and lived in South East Qld... for some reason I thought it may have been you.

Hey Rasta. Did you take your bike to Fred yet for a dyno tune?
