    PG'day DC,

I haven't ridden up that way but I have driven through a few times. It depends on how many hours you do in the saddle and the range on your bike but I reckon it could be done.

The longest stretch with no petrol is from Port Hedland to Broome, about 600 kms but the Sandfire Flat roadhouse is exactly halfway so as long as you can get 300km out of your bike you should have no troubles.

Check out www.crazyguyonabike.com for some tips, I found this guys blog a while ago. Looks like a blast...

    Hi DC,
There are plenty of guys on this forum who have done the ride both ways, I am sure someone will poke his head in eventually.

Not having done this one yet I am reluctant to add, however I did venture to Newman a couple of years ago in the merry month of May, there was a fuel issue were we had to purchase a small jerry can at Dallwalinu to ride through to Mount Magnet, then there was fuel available onto Newman, I am unaware of the present status. Pt Hedland is about another 470 k's if my memory serves me right. i have driven both ways but not ridden, this was supposed to happen this September but will be postponed again.

My personal preference for this trip under current planning strategies will be Perth to Pt Hedland via the coastal road, good road with plenty of bum stops for fuel and coffee and the now and then sea scenes are more appealing then the interior to Newman road. The sea side towns of Kalberri and Exmouth are worth a look albeit a fair hike of the main highway.

Good luck on your endeavours, Paul

Make sure you have accommodation organised in Pt Hedland. Very hard to get as almost everything is taken up by FIFO workers.

I used to live there in Pt Headland for many years so did the trip quite often on my bike... first question why would you want to go there there is nothing there.. similar to the nullarbor, second do not ride at night because there are many Roo's and live stock on the road passed Carnarvon and not all servos are open all night so plain your stop overs by dark. it is a two day ride to Headland... probably three to four on to Darwin but Broome is a good place to stay a few days. This is a good time to go, summer is 40 average every day so very uncomfortable ride. you do not need cans of fuel.. plenty of servos all the way. Remember after Headland be careful where you swim there are crocs up there.
