Hello. My name is Brett. I live on the Gold Coast.Aust.  I am 42 yrs old n a family man. I am looking to buy my first Harley Davidson.

I rode moto X and short circuit for many yrs when younger and some jap road bikes for a few years before losing interest. I have the money now to by a bike to cruise on and take the kids for a ride/or the wife with me. I have a few friends who have HD's but they rarely ride them. I am trying to get some family/friend fun happening with the occassional cruise and meet some other nice like minded people.

I need advice on which 2010 to 2012 model to buy. I am 5'11 in height, weigh apx 120 kilograms (short n stocky) and want a big comfy bike to handle my weight plus a passenger like my brother whos also 120 kg.s  Is a fatboy or a roadking the way to go ? Wanting a bike that cruises as good as it looks.

Any advice would be great. Thanking for readiong my post

    Brett

thanks guys for the kind welcome. i think the test ride will have to be the way to go, and waiting for a 2013 model could also be a good idea, or pick up a superceeded 2012 model might save a few bucks. unfortunately, none of the 2012 models have a nice electric blue paint scheme ?

shld i be starting the test rides with a fatboy or a roadking, whats the best bike to cruise on without spending more than say around the 30 K mark. I noticed they had a selection of brand new fatboys for $28 K and i thought the price on a roadking was not too far away from low 30's ?

noticed alot of the larger bikes with only 12 to 18 mths under their belt with very low klms for low to mid 20's which seemed to be big savings compared to new. where to start, where to start.lol

Hi Mate and welcome, as most people have said try them all! As for cumfy long distance bikes try a street glide and yes you can get it in blue, its called big blue pearl. Looks crap in the photos but nice in real life 34k new. If you have the mrs with you and you want to do some big klm trips you need to take a closer look at the touring range, ultra, street glide or roadking she is sure to love you for the extra comfort and weather protection they offer. Have had great customer service from the boys at Sunshine coast Harley.

ROFLOL. If you really want a Harley after all that, I would suggest a Road King with a big seat and good suspension, and perhaps some diet/lifestyle changes, lol

    Thanks guys.

At 125 kilograms I am not fat at all, just built like a brick shithouse. After putting on all the riding gear, I would probably be close to 140 kgs i would imagine.

I have been to the USA a number of times and there are alot of big blokes who would weigh easily between 120 and 160 kilograms all day long.

None of these blokes were fat , just big solid blokes . but who cares if anyone is carrying an extra 20 kgs anyway, great for knocking out muppets)

That got me thinking that std Harleys like the fatboy or roadking,e- glide etc, touring models must be built to take the weight surely. I also believe in the one penis per Harley rule unless ya have to give ya mate a double somewhere on a very very rare occassion. People in the USA are alot bigger than most blokes over here, so Harley must be doing something to take the weight of people in the 100 kg plus club.lol

I am surprised the general consensus isnt that the bikes can handle decent weight easily ?

mate just go test ride a few different models.
most of the weight stuff is just playing with you
who gives a fuck what size you are. as long as your ok with it.
just get a bike YOU like and ride the thing

Thats why you should look at one of the tourers. Things like the rear shocks can be pumped up to cope with added weight and the seats are more "generous" in their size. Yes a tourer will take the weight but you may well have to do heavier fork springs etc.

    thanks. will do.

took my 3 yr old son HUNTER with me down the HD shop yesterday on the GC.

I asked him which bike he liked and he ran straight over to a black n yello V ROD. He said buy this one for me daddy ! The little bugger would try n ride it if he could. One thing I am looking forward to is taking my son with me every now n then. When he gets older, I will make sure he has a HD to ride with dad.

checked out some nice bikes. will go back without the young bloke and i can then get a real good feel for which horse will be the pick. going to go into wackers in the city-bris and check out their shop n prices as well.  seems to be a few deals getting around.  good times ahead.

if i was cashed up enough, i would buy a yellow V Rod just to take to the willowbank drag strip, or for use when i wanted a quick 5 to 10 minute ride.

in a perfect world, a v rod siting next to a fatboy or roadking in the same garage would be just perfect.  i watched the doco on austar about the harley factory making n designing the latest vrod range incl the screamin eagle drag model etc, what a great doco to watch.

the best of harley was on offer during that doco. a great watch. the harley factory is huge. who would have thought HD has a anuual turn over of over 5 billion. must be doing something right.  my 3 yr old son has a good eye. he loved the vrod.  hope his taste in women when he gets older is just as good !

the major problem with the fatty is that it is a softtail and the single unit on the swingarm isnt enough to handle large riders and passengers. As a result , whilst you might be fine on a straight road with a passenger , hitting lumps and holes on bends will tend to make the bike wallow, bottoming out and grinding pipes etc . Not a great feeling . It also only has a single front disk and not the best braking when under a heavy load.

The tourers have much better suspension and theoretically can cope with a bit more ..also have twin disks. They also sit higher so less prone to grinding .

BTW - In the States the roads are far better .
