We tried three different well known accounts over the years and paid money to the tax man each time. Then one day (after being told how much I owed and going off) a friend said these fuckers often couldn't give a shit unless you're earning big bucks and he suggested we try that tax program you get from the ATO for free. It takes you through the return step by step, tells you what you can and can't do (what you can and can't do without receipts too) and low and behold - without even trying we got a refund for the first time, completely legit.
I'm not telling anyone to pack in their accountant, but it doesn't hurt to try it and it warns you when you are going to submit info to Mr Tax man (has every other year anyway) so you can go back over things and be sure - or go with whatever your accountant says if you don't like the results. If you get big bucks back feel free to add to my buy a beer paypal fund  :P
