Jiffy/side stand issues

I get on my motorcycle, I flick the satnd up. It's a second nature thing. Like selecting neutral before stopping. Happens automatically from years of doing it day in day out - Some people remember to put a seatbelt on in a car, I get reminded by the beeping sound or the driver.
I think having a cut out switch or whatever is just more un-needed crap that can fuck you around when fault finding. Postie bikes have an ingenius little design on both their side stands to automatically retract them, pull a postie over for a look if you haven't got a CT1110 in your shed.

Mine pretty much goes up as I scoot it the couple of metres out of the gate. You know the drill, stand down, open gate, roll through gate, stand down, go back and lock gate, start bike up and go for a ride. It takes fuck all and it goes past the lock point, and then each consecutive bump knocks it further up and out of the way.
    Cheers

managed to take off in the driveway once with the stand down and it did come up in position after dragging couple of meters.

didn't realise what happened at first but it all been smooth, no real danger.

i would have liked the stand to have an engine kill off switch so it doesn't start if it is not in neutral, my other bike, a kawasaki vulcan had this and it is a shame that HD doesn't have it. i just can't trust the neutral light and always start the engine with the clutch in....

On the 70's onwards Jappers those "sidestand" cut off switches ALWAYS fucked up sooner rather than later and got junked.

Think Kawasaki z900's and z1000's for starters

NONE of them still have them working today !

They caught all the roadgrime and roadspray and fucked up real quick..

Maybe that's why we don't have them on our Harleys today !!

I'd rather a neutral lock out switch instead so that you can't start your bike in gear, I've done it a couple times accidentally, lucky it didn't run on and bang into anythin, all it did was lurch forward a little before I took my finger off the starter button. Now I try to make a habit of rolling the bike forward a bit to make sure it's in neutral before starting. I know of some cars that won't start even in neutral, unless you have either the clutch or brake pedal depressed.

I have to agree with the anti side stand cut out comments. I've have a few bikes with them and most of them have eventually caused problems. Once even leaving me stranded by the side of the road for a couple of hours until the RACV arrived and then they had to tow my bike to the nearest shop.

Personally I do not want to ride or own a vehicle that thinks it is smarter than me.

Constant beeps when I am reversing a car WITHOUT the seat belt on is a fuck off.

Haven't taken my keys out 2 seconds after I open the door is a PISSOFF.

Lights, bells and whistles can get fucked, pissoff and WTF is it all about?.

They call them idiot lights for a reason and now with the buzzers has just trumpted it up.

No offence OP .Just how I see it.

    To Scouser

That's a Japanese home market requirement ( and probably some Euro countries as well ) on your bike.

Not required for ADR's , so it was just left on your bike anyways.Only ditch it if it fucks up obviously

Just one of the few wee differences to an "Aussie" bike

Some countries you can only throw the starter motor over with the clutch in ! Another thing we don't have ( thankfully !)

    Just a Jiffy Stand story.

Going to a rally Saturday, lift jiffy stand up,riding out of the garage , and on to the road, (I did'nt hit the gutter or pot hole), there is a clang on the right hand side of the bike. The stand is down and jumping loose all over the place.  Yep, your've got it, the spring has come off.  So I ride back in the garage , found the spring on the driveway. The stand will still hold the bike up, but the bike has to be upright for me to get the spring back on.     I'm staying with my sister who is 8 months pregnent,(she is as big as a whale),  I yell out to her to come out,(she waddles out).  Right I said, you have to get on and hold the bike upright while I get the spring back on. The bike is a 2009 Electra Glide, swag , tent and all my other gear. She was shitting herself.   I thought to myself all I need is for her to break her water and I'm fucked.  Long story short, got the spring on , all good.   Not really, because the spring has lost a little tension it wont pull the stand all the way up. When I went around easy left handers , scrap , scrap. So the moral of the story is, if your jiffy stand spring comes off for any reason, get a new one, about 10 bucks
