Replaced a tyre last week and found the bloody swing arm has cracked at the axle hole. Apparently a common problem on the 97 - 99 bikes. In 2000 the swing arm is extensively strengthened in that area. Is it safe to weld it or should I replace it?? What a piss off!!!!
Yeah all good. have welded it and strengthened it as well. The problem with putting a later one on is this. I would need to buy a new brake caliper, all new belt adjusting hardware oplus a whole heap of other stuff. Then I would have to modify my swing arm bushing area to fit the new one. It really is not feasible so we welded it. One would wonder if this is so prevalent, then why hasn't Harley brought out a recall or mod to fix the damned problem.
think i read about thisas i have a 99 roadking, the wheel(belt) adjusters on the axle have a small support area inside the swingarm and when the axle nut is cranked up hard it can crush the swingarm leading to a crack i remember there being a different adjuster setup which had heaps more support around the axle cant remember but goggle it should find it cheers
you can weld it up proper but you will have to reinforce it then it will be stronger , it's no good just welding it
