One of the bike mags (LTR?) advertised all inclusive package deals (bike hire, accommodation meals etc) which might be worth checking out. Chances are someone on here knows which mag was running it.

Heavy Duty Mag have tours to Sturgis.  I am planing on going in 2013 also
with my neighbour who also rides and is keen to go,
He hasnt done the Sturgis trip before , but has been to the States twice before
and seems to think that if we pre book our hire bikes and acom at Sturgis early
and sit down { with beers } over the next few months and plan our own tour,
we will save a fair bit of coin .
Budget acomodation will be easy to get, its only in and around the rally
that you would have to pre book.
My mate seems to think that we will do a 2 and a half week trip , all up
for 10 to 12 grand aprox each.
I'll keep you updated as we go along in the booking and planing process,
I"ve been talking about this trip for about 6 or 7 years. bout time I turned it
    into a reality !

There's been plenty of previous threads here discussing the topic,

try using the search function by simply entering "Sturgis" and lots of info and experience should pop up.

Yeah I went last year, what a blast!

We did the trip by ourselves (4), hired bikes and booked accomadation.

We flew to LA drove to Vegas Hired bikes at Eaglerider (Fantastic say G'Day to Karen) rode to Sturgis. Brought tents, mat and sleeping bag at Walmart cost $50.

The tent is still at Sturgis might be still there but I doubt it. Camped across the road from the new Easyrider Pub (iN sTURGIS) between the car wash and some units cost $15 / night.

We slept very well because we were very tired each night. If ya want to know any more PM me

going for the first time this year but looking at buying a bike as want to ride around for a couple of months afterwards and cheaper to buy than hire for that time couple of mates went 3 years ago and bought bikes over there and sold afterwards,  worked out even cheaper than hiring bikes or going on a tour

I've been the last few years on my own and stayed in the same camp ground as Neil and the Heavy Duty crew which for mine is the best and cheapest campground in Sturgis at $15 a day and a donation for breakfast. Has showers, laundry and toilets and is walking distance from the main street and Maccas. (for medicinal coffee only) If anyone is interested, I'll take you on the tour for a fraction of what the tour groups will charge you. I'll pick you up at the airport and show you around LA for a couple of days until we leave. I've been to the US 37 times in total and have a base there. I rode across the country 3 times last year and have a boat and a condo there and heaps of contacts. I can hire you the bikes or you can buy your own and I'll import them back home for you as well if you like. I've done that quite a few times and have a shipping agent in LA. I'll tell you the costs up front and guarantee you won't do it cheaper. Or Chopaweeza on this site can do the same thing for you which I think you'll find is cheaper than hiring if you sell the bike when you get home. If you need somewhere to keep a bike until you arrive to ride it I can arrange that for you as well free of charge. If you want an up front cost I can work it out pretty quickly. It'll depend on whether you hire or buy a bike. My tour will cost you about 4 grand all up including air fares fuel and accommodation. If you want to bring a bike back add about 7 grand and that will have your bike here, taxes paid, shipping & import duty paid and registered in your name with 12 months reg. No more to pay. If you buy a current model bike add about a thousand dollars to that. I have contacts at Bartels HD in Marina Del Rey if you want to buy new and plenty of others if you want to buy 2nd hand which is what I would recommend. Alternately the guys at Eaglerider are good to hire from and I can arrange that for you too. My advice if you have or can get the cash is buy and then sell your bike when you get back and pay for your trip. If anyone is interested let me know. I've been thinking about doing this for a few years but this thread convinced me I should. If you're interested PM me and I'll give you my phone number. I ran into Chopaweeza last week in LA going about his bike business. I think he'll vouch for me.

Re my post above. Add 4 grand if you want me to take care of the bike and insurance. That's 8 grand all up no more to pay. (If you've already got your passport and riders licence.) Your Oz licence is good in the US.

We'd go through Vegas and come home via Montana, Wyoming, Utah and Vegas. You will never see better scenery and will get to ride the Bear Tooth Pass and visit Yellowstone National Park.

I was going to go this year, but unfortunately work commitments have put this on hold. So plan B is Daytona Bike week Feb/March 2014. Usual trip every year has me in Vegas at that time of year so extending to go to bike week and up to see mates in cold NY
