Another returning motorcyclist on his first Harley

    Hi All,

Have been lurking here for a few months, thought I will join up once I get my Harley. I used to be mad keen on motorbikes in my younger days, have done a lot of riding, but am now re-joining the fraternity after a hiatus of almost 20 years (yes, the usual suspects - kids, mortgage, job changes etc). From the introductions, there seems to be a few of us like that around.
Meanwhile, I had never lost the passion for motorbikes, used to say “A Harley one day, one day...”. Well, the years passed by until the epiphany struck after recovering from a major health scare a couple of years ago and I decided that its high time that “one day” becomes “right now” (the mortgage can wait!). My friends say it is the classic mid-life crisis - do I care as long as I have a Harley to ride?!!
I have always liked the Fatboy (for some strange inexplicable reason, the words “fat”& “boy” seem to strike a chord with me)!;). Started doing my research via bikesales & Google and realised there was no way I could afford a decent Fatboy for the coin I could scrape together, then just happened to stray into this forum (what a storehouse of information!) and discovered the US imports - the rest is history.
I imported a 06 Fatboy with lots of fruit from the US via Chopaweeza (thanks mate, for your fantastic customer service) - extremely happy with it so far (looks mint, rides well but fingers crossed of course as it is an unknown commodity), I will post more details on the US imports thread. So here I am, riding my very first Harley at the ripe old age of 48! Except that the bloody Melbourne weather will not allow me to do so. No, I definitely don’t plan to be a fairweather biker, but will get out once I get back my motorcycle “legs”.  Want to do longer rides.
Thank you all for lots of info that I have gained from this site. Hope to meet many of you on the road.

    Hi and Welcome,

I also just bought my first Harley, a 2006 Lowrider, and was very surprised by the handling. Doesnt seem heavy to me at all and has a surprising turn of speed when needed.

In fact finding it so easy to ride thinking of selling my 2007 Bonnie which I was keeping as my everyday rider with the Harley being used mainly for 2 up stuff.

I rode the Lowie down to Melbourne on the long weekend just past and got a bit damp on the way down and when I headed back to Sydney on the monday rode into the wettest june day in a million years so they reckon. I had my Drizabone long jacket and drizabone pants on over my gear and arrived home nice and dry. I did take my full face as well as open face and threw the full face on at about Gundagai. Luckily while in Melbourne my nephew had a mate who let me keep the bike locked up in his garage.

You will soon get your bike legs back but I agree its better to start back slowly, you live in Melbourne there will be plenty of wet days in the future so you won't miss out. ; )

I get ya with the Fat Boy name as I was pondering one for the same reasons, some might say the low rider is just as appropriate. lol

Ride Safe and enjoy the new bike
    Nigel

Rains I was 61 when I got my first HD - best thing ever. Suffered the same old mid-life jokes but stuck to the standard reply: "I told my wife it was either the HD or a big busted blonde. She said get the blonde, no one ever got killed falling off one of those." I got the FatBoy anyway!

The 05 FatBoy I have is way more stable than the sporty I first had. A very easy ride. Good on you! Hope to see you on a ride sometime.
