I just had a mate buy an old Dyna with just over 4000 kms on the clock - looking at it 40,000 hard Ks would be barley believable, even 80 thousand wouldn't be a stretch.
So how is it that people can have decade old (or more) bikes and claim they've only done a handful of Ks on them?   The RTA (or whatever) asks your OD reading when you buy/sell a bike so do they actually check these things when people sell them again?  Can you go to the RTA and get them to pull up old records to prove the Ks and what happens when people are caught out?

dont know the answers mate but it's not good when it happens. did your mate buy it based on the k's or he just wanted that particular bike? odometer altering I beleive is an offence in most states but actually proving it maybe an issue.

It would make sense that the RTA keep track of the KLMS not so much for their own benefit in as much as the benefit of maintaining a record for future purchases. Worth a try. Low act if its bullshit....

Now, I'm hoping he doesn't find this site till this topic is a page or two down :)

And I'm wondering if the RTA will answer an anonymous question...lol.

I've got another question, when my mate was bouncing around telling me what a great deal he got I didn't actually say anything except, "great, glad your happy...gotta love Harleys etc" - all non committal about my opinion of the bike... Would you say something about the Ks or shut your gob? I'm thinking I shouldn't say shit since he's happy...maybe help him go over the bike from top to bottom to make sure there aren't any wear and tear, safety issues and act dumb when someone, inevitably says something?

Someone has had a word with him (no one I know) so its all out in the open now. He's spoken to the guy he bought the bike off and he's said he bought the bike only a year ago with 3000kms on it (one year and only 1000kms seems suss to me anyway..lol) and he wondered about the mileage too. Bikes being checked out properly so I'm happy playing the village idiot and pretending I didn't notice anything was amiss :)

If even for good servicing practises (let alone safety reasons) misreporting OD readings needs to be stomped on.

I have worked on several 1HD "Grey" import bikes here in Perth now, and they've ALL had less than 5,000 miles (8,000K's ), ???

EVERY FUCKING ONE ! WELL FUCK ME WHAT A FUCKING COINCIDENCE IS THAT ???

One of them, a 2007 Deuce, was indeed super clean under the seat and all, shiny boltheads stil. Ex-Nevada ( desert ) bike apparently.

The very next bike, A 2007 SOFTAIL Standard, was stone chippy as all fuck. grey crusty boltheads etc etc.

Both of them under 8,000 recently complied K's. Yeah , right....

Did I tell the owner of the second bike my thoughts ? Well no, what was the point of that ?

    I have seen personally 3 CVO's here in Perth recently , all  "under 1,000 original miles ".  ie 1,600 K's !!

    Again, " yeah, right ! "

" CAVEAT EMPTOR " or Buyer beware was never more true than right now in the second hand Harley market

Remember a second hand low miles MPH speedo is really really cheap on US ebay, and plentiful as !!

i have just bought an 04 softail with 500km's on the clock.. Yep you read it right 500km's..   Now, as it was an import and the add said it had done 8000 km's i did a check on the bike through a nationwide rego check in the states and low and behold it had been sold with 11000 miles on it..  But as you all know its easy to replace a console and odometer when you need to convert it to km's ..  i still bought the bike..

When i come to sell it, i could in theory, say it only has very low km's on the odometer, without lying..  i have no plans to sell it..

in 2002, a bloke was selling his bike with around $10k of bits, pieces and mods for $23K, it had 800Km's on it.
the lad had more dollars than cents, he got bored with the bike so was selling it off

$23.000 it was a huge bargain that day

Hmmm... I wonder how many old speedos are sitting around with very low Ks on them because the owner has replaced with the flash taco combo that HD released. I know I have one! :) My stock speed is sitting in a box with 4000ks on it.

How easy would it be for me in 5 years time if I sell the bike to swap it out?? Takes 2 minutes and the bingo! 4000 original kms. ;)

I am not saying that I will do that at all - but that's how easy it will be.

Don't look at the ODO when buying a bike. Look at everything else - it will tell you if it has done 4000k or now. :)

With the new ECU's in the bikes don't they keep the mileage in them as well. So if the speedo is replaced they can be loaded with the correct reading? I might be wrong but I am sure that this was stated on here somewhere...

It's another reason I stretched the budget and went new. I will have this bike for years, and I know every single Km that is on it, because I put them there. :)
