Hi all. Have a 85 fxst that I've just fitted a crane cam hi-4 ignition to. Lined up the V to the old one but the bike wont start. I'm getting spark and cranking but no fire. Tried to adjust it but that just made it harder to crank. Any help is greatly appreciated.

you have to static time her 1st as per the instructions on TDC  then adv her a notch  about 1/32nd " to 1/16th on the backing plate then check with a timing light ,with the dot in the window @ 3 ,000 rpm,        make sure the green wire is conected to the VOES or ground it out ,                   set the module switches to 12,oclock & set on electric start mode only

I'll check the fuel tonight but that looked ok when I had a quick eyeball last night. YEah Dave bought it as a kit so came with everything. Getting new plugs today as well as a service so I'll make sure I gap them. I'll try the swapping leads hmmm if al else fails! Thanks for the advice guys!

Hi all. Quick update. Swapped the leads over and she fired up but is running rough. She will idle but when I give her a twist it sounds like she is still way out. Dave, I set it as you have in your pic and it didnt like it. Did the static timing and the led didnt turn off until I went anticlockwise and ended up in the 11 o'clock position. Smells like its running rich too. Thinking from my car experience that the timing is still way out but harleys are all new to me. Thought guys?

Is the Crane HI 4 new?
I had a HI 4 in my Evo, for ages I was chasing what I thought was a carby problem (Mikuni HSR42), ran super rich at idle, fouled plugs once a week, backfired through the exhaust, would cough and splutter around slow corners and idle was erratic one minute 800 rpm and the next stop 1100 pm. Did everything from check vacuum lines, VOES, replaced inlet seals, rejetted everything, backed the fuel pump off completely, nothing worked. After I was convinced it could not be the carby, I replaced the HI 4 ignition with an Ultima - all problems gone.

Hi DaveP yep fresh out of the box. Kiwi I've hooked up the VOES to the green wire as instructed but havent checked the hose so will check it tonight although I didnt touch that side. Got some new plugs today so will try them. Does the rotor behind the module need to be in a certain spot for this? Doesnt say in the instructions for the Hi-4. Im using my car brain here and not sure if the rotor has an effect like in a car.

Does that mean cause I had the original electronic ignition, not points, I dont need to use the VOES? That was the one thing I didnt check, which way the rotor was!

I'll check out the hose for the VOES and the rotor tonight. Yep have a copy of that. I think I've read it about 100 times to make sure I didnt hook up anything wrong!

And if in the future the engine wont restart when hot ill guarantee its the Hi4. I had one of these mounted in the cam nose and everytime id stop for fuel or a piss, the bloody thing wouldnt start unitl it rested a while. Swapped over to the original external Hi4 module and all has been sweet ever since (15 years). Like anything electronic, they cant handle heat soak.

Does that replace just the module wazdog and leave the plate and coil original?

Yeah Wolvy, the original sensor stays, you just replace the module. In my case I had to run an xtra wire to the coil coz I changed to the single fire coil.
And naturally the heat problem was more likely with motors running higher comps which is when my problem started.

Ok update 2! Put a test light on the coil, front cylinder blinking, rear cylinder constantly on so the module must have shit itself. Now its back to crane for warranty. Thanks for all your help guys.

YEah hmmm double checked them when I put the test light on them. Nothing else it can be except for that module.
