Advice needed for soon to be new Harley owner

Hi all , Tim here ..... will soon be getting my next Harley , last one was a 1976 superglide slightly modified back in the late 80` , had to sell due to a few to many run ins with the so the called protectors of the public and has taken this long to get to a position where i can get another one as i have allways felt there is some unfinished buisness with the great American icon .

Am not ashamed to admit to riding Jappers before and since , 32 years riding so far and hopefully many more to come ..... i have allready posted a couple of questions about ShockGun Shocks for a Softail Standard as that is the direction i am heading but am also courious to hear from all you forum members about the pros and cons of firstly ..... Softails VS Wideglides ..... and being in the region of 150 kg`s you may be able to understand my desire for an air ride set up ..... { hey even fat barstards need the feel of freedom dont they } ..... and i have been told a wide glide may better suit my needs .

And secondly Evo VS Twin cams , remembering my last Harley was a mid 70`s ShovelHead with it`s fair share of headaces , so i would think any think from Evo upwards is going to be a marked improvment ..... i have allready read a great blog that was posted in these forums on the subject such as the cost associated with Twin Cams due to Heating problems ..... i thought may be solved with an oil cooler ..... the cost of modern electrics involved with fuel injection and the multiple sensors that come with them as opposed to a straight forward carby ..... Lifter blocks being molded into crank case oppossed to being replacable on older models and things like cheaper weaker main bearings used on newer models as oppossed to Timkum bearins which seems to be the bees knees according to some older riders ..... mind you it must be said that a lot of these problems would only raise there head in unusally hard riding conditions so may not be an issue for me .

Lastly a couple of requirerments should be stated ,  and they are that whatever i get MUST have spoked wheels front and back  ,  slightly lowered in the rear .... again the reason of getting a air ride set up ..... be as reliable as possiable , at least a 200 rear tyre and while not the be all and end all , the price needs to be right .... which of course is subjective to eveyones personal believe

So hopefully i have posted this advice request in the right area and have not dribbled on to much for you good folk and will be very interested to hear any and all of your responses ..... thanks again for reading ..... Keep  your knees in the breeze and the wind in your hair ..... Tim .

G'day Tim and welcome. Most of us have had jappas before, nothing wrong with that. Plenty of big blokes ride standard H-D's. Just find one you like with good k's, good condition and a good price and enjoy it. Don't give yourself too much brain damage trying to find a perfect bike. It won't happen. Shocks are a good mod but try the standards first and wind up the spring and see if it suits. Hope this helps.

P.S. I'm a big bloke too (130) kg and never had issues with my last 3 Harleys shocks.

Welcome Tim , progressive make heavy duty springs for their shocks , also do lowered , , softail or dyna . Sounds like you need a softail deluxe .

Thanks FLHuTCHu ..... Definitly know what you mean about doing my head in , christ when i had my old Shovel in the 80`s there was about one third on offer compared to these days , but thats a good thing .... i hope  ...... and your not wrong about being next to impossiable finding the perfect bike which is why i may end up going the EVO way so i can spend the saved dollars on getting it the way i like it and thats what it is all about in the end .

Completly agree about going with the standard shocks first , hopefully wont need the expensive ones after all but if it comes to that then i will have a good base line to work with ..... Thanks again and welcomed the imput ..... Tim .

Hi Allde ..... No real reason out side of personal choice when it comes to the desire for spoked wheels front and back although cost does come into it a little as a good alloy rim with stainless spokes will usally be cheaper than most billit wheels but it`s what i was into in my youth ..... { so many years ago } ..... and it just seemed to stay with me all this time ..... thanks for the welcome and the inquiry .... cheers Tim .

Thanks KiwiDave ..... i reckon you hit the nail on the head .... there are pleanty of good Evo`s out there at the moment and the money i save buying one instead of a TC will hopefully leave me heaps to get it looking and going the way i want .

Power was never the issue, proberbly more the old might as well get as new as i can afford type of thing but when i sold my old Shovel i allways told myself when i get another Harley it will be a Evo ..... that dosent mean of course that i wont bow to my inner demons and go with the new whiz bang model but i am tending to lean back to the Evo ..... will drop a line into you all when i have worked out which way to go ...... thanks heaps for your response  and stay upright all ..... Tim .
