Running in a new 103 stage 4 motor

I am not going to run it in like the book says, baby it till 1000k's,  as I don't want a slow motor. How have you run yours in. I am thinking of following the run in as I have done with my jappers, taking into consideration the lower rev's on harley's.

On my Jappers I followed the run in stated below and always had good strong motors. Redline 15,500 rpm.

I always bring rev's up nice and easy, not full throttle,

    50 - 100k's I took it easy.

     200 - 300k's I would run 5-6 grand touching 6-8 grand

300 - 500k's I would use mid range rev's 6-8 grand and bring it up to 10 grand.

500 - 700k's I would run 8-10 grand and push it up to redline.

ride it hard till 1000k's, bike is run in.

Usually do it over 2 -3 days.  I did most of this running in on country roads, using different gears to stick to the speed limits of course.

I got stage 4 going in my new FBob and my mechanic
Has always told me its ok to give em a bit of stick but
Just make sure you short shift em.
Done that with my last kit and motor was always strong
    And never missed a beat.

There will be new oil & filter in her, was thinking of changing oil filter every couple of hundred K's just to be safe and then oil at 1000k's. Cheers

Dv8, what sort of numbers are you expecting from this. Build??
I know that the parts mag says around 115 hp and Tq, but when I have asked mechanics they usually say around 100-105.... Would be good to find out some facts so I know which way to go with my build.
Any info would be appreciated man.

I have been told 115hp/105tq. Seen on web sites any where from 110hp/105tq to 115hp115tq, even as low as 108hp/102tq. I think 3 things will make the numbers, exhaust, running it in hard and a good tuner. I have long shot exhaust, a 2 to 1 exhaust maybe better, but sticking with what I have currently. I will be running it in hard and seeing the guy in Bunbury for tunning, not sure of his name, but have heard good things. currently my bike is running SE211 cams, intake and long shots, 87hp/92 tq. hop0ing for 110hp/110tq. If torque is not good, I have been looking at the woods 400 cam in 103 stage 4 kits, this set up is showing 120 tq with the same hp. will see what happens. Not too worried about numbers, if she hards hard I will be happy.

Hey rans I will let you know some numbers in about 3 weeks for stage 4.

Am expecting mid 100s even with good set of 2 into 1s. Book is full of shit

    115 is highly unlikely.

Dv8 your right them pipes won't do you any favours

G'day DV, I turned the key on my Heritage and rode normally, only not holding a constant speed but varying it for the first 500k's....87,000k's on and still running as sweet as a sewing machine....the modern motors like a bit of stick, blows away the cobwebs....puts a smile on Mona Lisa's face too...

Well, picked bike up today and did about 60k's home. I follwed the motoman run in procedure. Basically used 2nd or 3rd gear and ran 2500-3000 up to 4000rpm and back down first few runs, then went from 3000-5000 rpm next 5 or 6 runs. took it easy till freeway and then sat on 3000rpm and bove, passing using 3/4 throttle till 5000rpm. varying speed and rpm the whole way.

At first i didn't feel the difference and was not impressed with the upgrade. ( had 211 cams, intake and exhaust) to stage 4 103 kit with SE260 cams. I have found the upgrades to be deceiving, as i thought the kit would have been hard core, but found the power to be very user friendly and going much faster than it feels.  Previously with 211 cams, doing 100k's in 5th and excerlating would be sluggish, dropped to 4th and be ok, now with new kit in 5th, hit the throttle and you are doing 140 before you know it. It now passes with ease and think when this kit has been run in and dyno'ed, It will be a pretty good sit up.

Will test run against a mates who's bike is the same as I had, but his bike was always a little faster, as he run his in really hard. It will be interesting.

hey dv8 are you sure the cam is a 260 because thats what they ran in the older kits and i know the latest stage 4s now run a 259E with a few other slight changes to change the dynamics

Went into Frasers yesterday to pick up my old parts. I had a chat and come out with 2 things. I do have SE259E cams, and these guys know shit about bikes. I asked if they knew if porting the 110 heads would give me some good gains. They didn't know, they reply was we just sell kits. I had to drop some parts off to Thunderteck in munduring. I had the same chat with them and soon realised I will be taking my bike there from now on.

The kit comes with c&c ported heads. Are you talking bout changing them?

I don't know if these heads are ported, if they are, not very much. From what I can tell , they need some additional work to help with velocity which will really help them make some nice power. The guys at thundertech had a guy in with the same kit as mine, they cleaned up the heads and matched ported the throttle body and added another 8% power accross the power range. Which should get me into 120tq/110hp. which would make me a very happy little camper.
