I pulled up at an "event" a while back on a sporty and a guy commented nice girls bike. I replied, "you looking for a date?" and everyone laughed. In hindsight I was lucky I wasn't beaten to death, but the point is not to take people's shit so seriously...and I guess another point would be to think before you speak when you're meeting a group of 100 or so "serious" bikers that you haven't meet before.
If you're happy with your bike nothing else matters, and if people think it does, they don't matter.

Sportys are a great bike, light, flickable and great fun, people who bag them generally have not owned or ridden one. Some of the early sporsters imo are some of the best looking Harleys made, would love one of them but they are a rare breed these days.

Its the same everywhere, my Nissan 4WD is awesome compared to my mates shitbox Cruiser. (it helps that I towed him home once )

The VTSS I had was better than any Ford.

Sportys are 900 or 1200cc, thats still a big motor. If someone hassles ya, ask them why they are'nt man enough to have a 124 cube S&S yet.

Not saying this applys to you blokes but a lot of blokes
go for sportys cause they want a Harley but can't afford
the big twins. Which means they don't buy them for what
they are but cause they are cheap. Which is fair enough but
if they don't want to cough up the extra bucks well they
need to live with the comments.
Yes I have owned one and they are a good starting point

Little bit of yes and no there chriso.
Sure the feel is to step up to a big twin but constraints with the coin is mostly the reason why riders go for the XL.
For me it wasn't about stepping up onto a bigger bike but the fact that if you dont like a new bike you can buy an older/bigger one for less coin.

A sporty neednt be a stepping stone for money reasons but a bike that suits the rider, and so be it.........................

A XL buddy years ago always used to appologise for his bike saying it is a 1000cc and not for the faint hearted and that's true.
but I "FEEL" that he protested too much.. hahaha

There is nothing wrong with a Sporty at all. Infact I still feel every woman should own one

My two bobs worth----I bought a brand new 883C a few years back. It was the first brand new bike/car Id ever bought. Traded a big Vulcan in on it. Sat on it and thought WTF ! how small it was! Picked it up in Launceston and rode down the midlands of Tassie and onto the Lake Leake highway. After about 15klm I coudnt stop grinning, Ive never ridden better in my life, I was always scared to ride big cruisers quick through corners-but the little Sporty was the quickest point to point bike Ive owned. sadly I had to sell it as they are completely unsuitable to two up riding. Now have a 1998 Road KIng Classic--keeps the mrs happy
