legal .. see them scooter riders wearing them every day
Got of these that I wear in the warmer months and as far as I know - as long as they have that appropriate sticker on them, they are legal.
Check out this mob... They have some cool helmets.

Gee...sorry MAN....For fuck sake, get out of the sixties....
They look more like the modern day Yank helmets to me, the original German helmets came down over the ears.I wear a half helmet & would not wear one at all if could, it's my fucking head I should be able to do what I with it.
I put one oif the short German Style Helmets on at a bike show once,
Never again,
Mrs nearly fell over laughing and called me Shultz all day. (Hogans Heroes reference for all you younguns)
I have a bad neck and back from a fall years ago and wear an open face most of the time as it feels more comfortable. I actually like some of the newer close fitting styles, bit like a jet fighter helmet I suppose. Most important for me is light weight.
Ride Safe All NIgel
P.S Back then they were called novelty helmets as not approved for use here.
He3y Badcooky have you tried the helmet on just wondering how they go for size?? I rekn they look shit hot nice for round town.
Hi Guys
please please dont take any old crap you get from a shop when they say its not legal. Its really very simple. A helmet has to pass the AS1698-2006 standard test to be legal to use on the road in Australia. Thats a federal law. To be sure if it is legal look at the helmet itself. If it is legal (ie not fitted with a dodgy sticker) it will have a sticker on the outside of the helmet normally near the back of the helmet and also a lable sewn into the lining of the helmet again normally near the back. look closely at both the label and the sticker the standard mark (its different for each certification organisation) its normally a tick shape will be the same on the outside and on the inside. Also to be AS1698-2006 compliant it should have a small operator instruction book attached to the helmet. So when the shop says they are not legal its normally a crock of shit because they dont stock shorty helmets and they want to sell you what they have in stock. There are a number of legal shorty helmets available in Australia from Zorros (www.zorros.net.au), to name just one. In reality if they have passed the AS1698-2006 test they are all equally as safe. Vic, TAS, SA, WA, ACT and NT law says on the road the helmet must be tested to meet or exceed that standard laid down by standards Australia and be marked inside and out with an appropriate mark.
It gets more complicated if you live in NSW or Queensland. the RTA's there have (completely illegally) added to the federal standard by only recognising 4 of the standard marks. (there are about 6 i think) Its a complex subject so i wont bore you with it. However those standard marks are : Global mark, TUV (German Standards organsiation) BSI (British standard Institute) & SAI global (5 ticks). SAI global were the original and first standard mark in Australia but each mark is equally as valid and if you look in both RTA's website from NSW and Queensland and look up the motorcycle rider manual you will see these marks in the riders manual along with a picture of each standard.
Thats it folks. i have researched this extensively and thats as we know it. I would offer advice particularly to NSW and Queensland riders that are getting a really hard time regarding helmets right now, that if you get stopped and get a ticket for riding with an illegal helmet download a copy of the rider manual from your local RTA when you go to magistrates court and take it with you. better still get a hardcopy of the manual. And ask the questions my helmet standard mark is in this book published by the RTA why are you prosecuting me when my helmet is compliant with the law as shown in this book.
You also mention buying helmets with DOT marks from the USA and also the German style helmets. These are both available as AS1698-2006 compliant helmets from suppliers inside Australia. In Victoria it is a 3 point offence to be riding without a compliant helmet plus $580 fine. The 3 points i think is mandatory across Australia although the fine varies from state to state.
i hope this helps
