Street Bob Lock up and crash

Just bought a 2010 Street Bob, love it but onil had it two days and on the third ride the engine seemed to lose power suddenly as I was riding in 3rd gear at about 40kph. Then suddenly it came to a sudden stop and threw me onto the road. Not too much damage to the bike luckily but I got a bit battered and bruised - 1st stack in about 20 yr! Bike started after being picked up and can be pushed in neutral or with the clutch in. I haven't tried to ride it again because the clutch lever is ground down to snapping point.

The bike shop is taking it back under warranty to see what the problem is but they say they don't have a clue what could have happened. The road was straight with no oil or potholes, really seemed to be something to do with the bike, unless I was doing something wrong but I can't think what. Any suggestions??

Glad your not too hurt...Did you happen to touch the front brakes as it sounds like you may have had a lock up...But only guessing...

Street Bobs have ABS brakes. Shouldnt have locked unless an ABS module is faulty BUT you said the engine lost power. May be an electrical control problem. Let us know how you go and what the conclusion is. Glad you are ok.

Street bob - 3rd gear - 40km/h - did it stall? Sounds like the revs may have been too low for the speed/gear.

My first guess was it dropped down a gear or gears (for whatever reason) and you get the huge pullback/surge which could have thrown you....but 3rd at 40 dropping to 2nd? Doesn't sound like to much of an effort...

Im not sure how happy my Streetbob would be riding around in 3rd at 40kmh. Although I do think it would warn me prior to spitting me off.

You say the engine lost power, was there some drivetrain lash and vibration like a 'chugging' type noise and feeling?

Seems very strange. In 3rd im cruising comfortably just over 60kmh (dont tell the crabs!!)...40kmh just seems quite slow for 3rd.

I'm not sure why this happened, but I'm with Underground. 3rd & 40km/h may not be the best combo.

If for what ever reason you lost fuel or ignition at that speed in 3rd, it might be possible to lock
the wheel due to the compression.
Shame you didn't just pull the Clutch in, but it obviously all happened a bit quickly !

I'm beginning to think you're all right about the gears. Ridden Jap bikes all my life and currently have a Kawasaki 1500 Vulcan which doesn't mind lugging at low speed. This is my 1st Harley and from what you're all saying, it's a different animal all together to ride! Maybe I've just learned an expensive (and painful) lesson but I'd still like the bike shop to look at it to put my mind at ease. Still can't wait to get back on and ride, it's sad to have it just sitting there. Reckon I'll be really careful about gear selection from now on!!
