Active Exhaust Valve

Hi Guys,  Bike is 2009 FLHT.  A little confused from other threads on this topic.  When the bike is switched off, is the Active Exhaust valve closed or open?   With  the bike on jiffy stand and idling, and you rev the engine, is the valve going from 'closed to open" or " staying closed"?   When you are riding , doing approx 2500rpm, does valve open?   I have read that in 6th gear valve closes, to create more back pressure, ie torque, is that correct?   I realise that valve is installed for EPA requirements in Australia.  If I disable the active exhaust system is there any negatives regarding engine performance?   If there are no negatives to performance, I have also read that you get a better sound from your add on mufflers , because they are less restrictive at lower rpm, is this correct?   If I do disable the system, is it just a case of buying an eliminator thingy, plug it in so no codes come up?   Shit, I've got a lot of questions, but I think you have the jist  what I'm asking.   Thanks Mark

Yes, the dealer did mine at the first service, sounds and I think performs marginally better than before.

Thanks for your replies Guy's,  I read that the dealer can disable the valve so a fault code wont come up.  I live 350 ks from the closest dealer so I'll toss up whether to go to dealer or buy the eliminator thingy.  Anybody used the eliminator thingy??   The valve closing in 6th gear for more back pressure that i mentioned, anyone got any comments on this??  Thanks Mark

the valve shuts on start up an opens once engine gets to correct operating temp then they stay open they dont shut in 6th as this would put way to much pressure on valve springs ect
my trade is exhaust tech started in the early 70s still make custom pipes ect for turbo an nitros an street bikes
the reason the valve shuts is its slows the gases sn keeps the heat in the engine until the o2 sensors get to their correct temp .then the valve opens you had them in hz holdens an 6cyl commodores ect they were in the manifold the v8 had em in the drivers manifold
the bikes can be sorted to delete it but if you do make sure ya give bike bit longer to warm up best thing is to eliminate it an put some strait threw slip ons on an itll be better all round buttttt you will lose fuel economy as ya do when ya put vance n shit pipes on
    hope this helps

Ol Scool Custom,  Thanks for your reply.   Seeing your in the exhaust business, in your opinion ,am I wasting my time disabling or eliminating the Active exhaust valve from operating?   Or do you think it would be a positive for sound and performance. Thanks Mark

if ya gunna change your mufflers an disconect or eliminate the valve itll be of benifet if your only goin to disable the valve you will get a really small gain the gain just fuckin the valve off to me aint worth the effort as one of your standard mufflers has a smaller internal dia than the other to gain any real hp ect best fuck valve off totally an get set of strait threw screamin eagle slip ons itll sound better an go better but as i said let the bike warm up bit longer before you ride it
can call me on 0450511192 if ya want an ill fill ya in
    cheers ron
