Had no problems with my shorty's being fitted from new at Perth harley (Cannington), They just made me sign a waiver stating that I knew the pipes were illegal.

Just clocked 1600kms and still loving it, although trying hard to avoid the fuzz!!

Anyone know of black heat shields for stock 883 sporty exhaust just in case though? Dont like the chrome!!!

Had a good chat with a snr sgt from the Hwy Patrol this arvo.

    To quote him,

so far only 1 bike has been given a work order. - if u r a few db over, big deal. This is aimed at the few fuck nuts that run with no baffles at all and wanna do Casey stoner impersonations at 4 in the morning thru residential areas.

He totally agreed that loud pipes save lives, so keep off the noise where you should and no drama. He also said they have had the meters much longer than was stated, but the commish gets heaps of drama whenever he's on the air about bike noise, so they gotta be seen to be doing something.

Don't give me no shit, just relaying what was said.

Changed out the standard baffles on my V&H Bigshots Staggered this morning. I borrowed the decibel meter from work so I could do before and after readings.
    The results were
    Standard baffles = 94 to 95db
    No baffles = 95db
    Quiet baffles = 93.5 to 93.8db
Test was done as per reg with meter 500mm from exhaust and at 45 degrees to it. 2500RPM engine speed.
Overall loudness doesnt seem much different but it does seem less raspy when given a squirt and a bit deeper. Decel popping seems a lessened also but i havent been for a decent ride yet. Overall I would say it probably would sound slightly less offensive to those without an ear for the magic tune of a V-twin.

Its been mentioned to me by quite a few riders that the "quiet" baffle isn't...at least not much but I was around for the same thing just a while back. Pretty much the same result you qoute.

I use the standard baffle in my short shots; but just got a set of Big City Thunder QQ baffles arrive yesterday. From what I've read/seen/heard they should do the job but give a deep rumble as well - something that SS aren't really noted for. I also have the meter handy so I'll post up results when I get around to fitting them.

If I get the 9-10% reduction the maker quoted me so much the better. I spent way too many years going to see bands like Motorhead as a youngster...

Loud pipes save lives.  Indeed, brother.  Indeed...

At the same time, loud pipes cause dickheads to show how dickheady they can be (as Christo pointed out) which is where the coppers and the average punters get the shits.

I've read up on it in Qld, dunno how it works and tbh I dunno where it is atm but Harleys have certan dB limits as do all vehichles.  It has to measured at certain angles from the exhaust outlet and certain distances etc etc etc, but also has to be read at 2000rpm.  There is a chart here somewhere I ran across showing most "average" models of Harleys and their "average" maximum tolerable sound level.  Most Harleys dont have a tacho.  2k rpm = what??

Even if it has a tacho, there is also a provision that says something like "under heavy acceleration the sound will be greater than the requirements" meaning, if you are going nuts at the lights, you should be ok as long as at 2k rpm you are within the right levels given the correct measuring techniques...

When I bought my little Iron, I got the V&H shorties, SE cleaner and tuner and got the dealer to make it all work nicely together and all I had to do was sign a little form saying I only had it modded for "track use" and not for general transport on Qld roads.  If I get pinged I'll have to get the exhaust quieter or drop the stockies on it but really, they have to also jump through hoops to prove that it is over the limit enough to get around the "heavy acceleration" clause.

Really, if a copper pulls you up and defects you, all you need to do is get the Transport Department (or whateverthefuck it is called in your state) to tick off that it is within reason.  Watch out for how they measure it, all the tech documents are published somewhere on the .gov.au sites in your state and most fuckers holding the clipboard and pen can't be arsed actually reading it let alone following it with all the changes.

I got pulled up a few weeks ago when they bocked off the street coz some dickhead bashed some other dickead and I ended up with 3 coppers talking about my bike, as in:  nice mirrors mate, really looks the part (they are technically too small according to regulation),  nice black exhaust, really gets the "Harley" sound out mate (technically too loud) and also the old 'how old is she?  is that a NEW one?' when it's a last year model.  WAIT WUT?  3 coppers and they were more interested in the bike rather than if it is legal which they SHOULD have pinged me for.  Oh, that could be because I don't ride it like a dickhead, I say "g'day" to the coppers, don't give em lip and nod and agree and wave em goodbye when we're done.

I may have just got lucky, but I know too many people that bitch about getting pinged when they act like a dickhead and then act like a moron once they get pulled up!

LOUD PIPES SAVE LIVES!  (just don't be a dickhead when you have em)

    Cheers,

    Shred.

I fitted the big city thunder baffles and the original V&H baffles into my bigshots, sound is a little deeper, to the bike to Kelmscott MVR and had the noise level tested, massive fail still way too loud. Save your money guys it didnt reduce the noise any where near enough.

Decided the short shots were a little loud so I stuck a half a pot scorer up behind the baffle - dropped it by around 5 db! made a really low gurgle ...sounds fuckin cool and got rid of the decel pop that VH pipes always seem to have

    Pot scourers you say??

I was just about to invest in the V&H baffles for my short shots but I may try your method Christoff, cheers mate...

tightly rolled chicken wire is another way of reducing noise .... probably aslo lasts a bit longer than a scourer

you just lose a bit of top end ... depending on how much you stuff in the pipe .

I downloaded an Android app for my phone called Smart Tools. One of the alleged smart tools is a db meter. Now, I know it's not a government sanctioned whatever its called meter, but my V&H short shots on my Iron 883 only came in at 69db at idle and 75db at what I guessed to be 2000rpm (obviously no tacho).

Surely this can't be right? The bike is quite loud I thought, this app must be up to shit???

Does anyone use a phone app? I read on another post that that was all the plod uses and if you are over on their phone then you get a canary.

I would be interested to know what others think?

you'll never get a proper result from a phone.

All you'll get is this one is louder than that one. You won't get an actual number you can rely on.

This one is only $30.00, and it works.

I ordered a sound meter off ebay because I was wondering how much louder Chez's tapered turbos were than my screaming eagle night stick (they sound lots louder FWIW).

Looks like I should have checked Jaycar first!
