Accident waiting to happen!

Was checking over the bike last night as it hasnt been used for the last 7 months. And found this.......luckily.

I have seen this happen before but the risers in that case didnt have the bolt run right through them. (They have a thread so that the bolt head is located under the top tree) This resulted in the bars breaking off the bike and the guy had no choice but to drop it.

In my case there is a bolt running through the centre of the risers so it would have stayed together, although going into a corner hard may have caused a bit of sphincter exercising!!

Steel Daggs, I have just put alloy ones on as thats all I had in the shed, Thinking of going to bars with built in risers. I gather these would be non-adjustable as to angle of the bars?

Lucky you found them now Burnzi, before they got any worse.

Must have been a production fault for that to happen to them.

Yeah it could be a design fault along the "sharp" edge maybe, this design has been around a long time. The other set I saw actually had an old crack next to where they finally broke. The guy was breaking heavily from a 100kmh into an intersection, the riser must have finally snapped because of the crack that was already there (part of the crack had rust stain showing it had been cracked for some time). He also had apes, 14" from memory, which wouldnt help the situation with the extra leverage especially during heavy braking.

If anyone has inch risers make sure they have the bolt running right through them to a nut and not a bolt only setup.

Mmmmm after closer inspection the bolt through one doesnt fair any better as the bolt would be left holding the base of the riser while the handlebars would be flailing around in the air..........with more sphincter action. Will be looking for a new set this weekend and yeah Dave definitely NOT aftermarket stuff.

one my brothers pulled into the clubhouse few yrs back an his bars came off just as he stopped
he had the same risers as you burnzi and wat i found was the bolt was to long and was pushing the bars and top part of the riser up the stress caused by to longer bolt cause it to crack an finaly break at the weakest point as yours did
