Hey everyone,
My Iron 883 is due to arrive this week - very excited. Anyway, I've got a set of black SE slip ons with buckshield heat shields, but I love a dash of colour on these bikes and wanted to add some red heat wrap underneath the heat shields (yes, purely cosmetic).
Has anyone tried this and know if it is fit? (If not, hope to show off some original thinking ) and secondly, any advice on reputable coloured (red or green) heat wrap?
Thanks everyone!
Definitely thinking about it. Ah recommendations for suppliers of the colored tape?
Just my 2 cents worth - leave the heat wrap alone - it'll cause corrosion because it is a moisture trap - it was originally used to keep heat in the pipe to aid exhaust gas velocity thus better scavenging (for drag & 'straight through' pipes). The wrap is porous (to slow overheating) and as a secondary effect - slow the burning of the riders leg(s) - if you paint it as mentioned in this thread, you are adding a seal to the wrap and overheating can occur and pipe damage will most certainly occur.
Heat wrapping was normally applied to large diameter header pipes to try and maintain exhaust gas temps which are reduced by the expansion of the gas due to the larger volume (thats why most harley header pipes are kept to 1-3/4" - maintain the exhaust gas expansion at approx 300 fps and the sonic wave at 1600fps - which is hard to do with short pipes). Anyways, if you got plenty of bucks to spend on exhaust systems, then go ahead and wrap - the red will fade to a pink, the pink to white and then the rust will start bleeding through and the wraps will go red again!!!!!!

Wow - some really interesting insight about the wrapt here! i might leave it alone for now and work out how to splash red across my Iron some other way.
I was hoping it'd relatively straight forward! Hehe. Oh well. Might spend the money on a new jacket
