Mate love you posts and dig ya riding style

I have done several builds keeping stock 103 pistons and stock heads with just a clean up, 1.9 intake and shaved to 82 cc using a mid to late intake closing cam of different brands, stock TB this costs about $1500 and when dynoed a couple of these builds are performing as good as the $4500 StageIV builds
I have done a couple of 107 builds that cost no more than $3500 and these are doing 120/120

    Just saying

costs were just over 3.6k not including dyno. but these costs are not really relevant now cause the AUD has tanked against the green back so everything has gone up included HD parts from the dealer or wherever ya get em from.

I am happy with my build, sure there are builds that make bigger numbers. but my goal for this build was to make 100 ft/lb at 2500 with a nice smooth torque curve which is what I got in the end. i also wnated something with manners but would get and boogie as well, minda wolf in sheep's clothing. Stealth for mine!

    cheers

My stage 4 now got 75,000 hard ks on it.
I have not had one problem with this kit, yeah it's always had a bit of oil usage
but always had good power and a joy to ride.
Only thing I did was change lifters at 60,000 as they are the weak spot. Just for piece of mind. I would recommend change em every 30-40 though.
So anyone continplating but worried about longitivity, well there ya have it.

Oh and have always changed oil at 4000 k intervals and always run Penrith diesel oil.

I changed my lifters at the 5000km mark with Gaterman lifters. Bike now has 74000km and they still look like new.
Seeing as I just upgraded to a 107" build by Ando. ( cheers mate. What a magician of knowledge and know-how)
My stg 4 went down hill and pistons caked in carbon. Due to excessive oil usage and scorched bores.
Check valves for running lean too.

Yep mine going to lushy for 107 overhaul soon... as oil usage getting a bit high but 75,000 sure is moneys worth in my books.
I had gatermans in my softy but after reading the failure rate they having in the states pulled em out and put S&S premiums in.
That is the problem with lifters, they can look fine, you just dont know by what they look like when they gonna fail.

Cheers for all the valuable info to those in the know. Sounds like there are some better options than the SE stage 4 kit. If you have a brand new bike do you just stick with the SE for waranty. Or is the 107 S & S kit that much better that it is worth the risk? Little concerned hearing about the oil usage on some of the builds. Is this to be expected from all performance upgrades or is the SE stage 4 kit just not the best quality.?

depends on builder and correct run in

afaik the SE stage 4 will screw your factory warranty anyway. Only way the warranty has half a chance is if the dealer decides to honour it. I got no oil usage on my bike, but it only has 5k on the new build. I went away from the SE stage 4 because the cams came on too late for my riding style. I don't want to wring its neck. imo that is not how the harley is built. for me it was about making lots of torque right off the bat then build from there. I tend to short shift rather than hang onto a gear at high revs, but each to his own i guess.

talk to your builder about what you want to achieve you will be happier in the long run. I spoke to my builder did the spanner work myself then he tuned the bike for me. It fitted my back pocket as well as my interest in doing the work myself.

    cheers

Mine only lasted about 5,000 or so after the 103 top end , 20k on the clock .. Hunter for early lifters as I heard they were better ,, but not sure about that either.

True hi energy or fast ramps kill the lifters,, mines only a 254e but I think it's the ramps ... On eBay there's lifters that flame to have been the original hd lifter for sale .... I had to readjust me lifters with an extra 1/2 turn to try to fix the problem after about 5,000k it started clacking again... Later lifters are said to restrict oil to the top end .. I think the oils to help cool so I went for the so called B lifter ... Wether they were or not is a different story ..if these Croke it I'll go for the others. But I have also hears the rollers fall out of them too ... I upgraded to a twin cam to inherit some floors ..lol.

Oops I'm using mobile Vtwin oil too .... Maybe that's helping creat a problem.   I'll go back to mineral oil and see if it helps .... I do have an oil cooler too. But I could on an average ride my oil don't expand enough.  But a long one is ok. It goes to full then ..lol??

Good point jon doe. Is stage 2 enough? First Harley ive owned. Love the thing but would also love a bit more mongrel in it. Only a month old with stage 1. Is a cam enough or does the smile you get from a stage 4 justify the expense. Like most of you im sure i dont need the thing to go any faster but would love a bit more torque. The odd burnout would be fun.. Greatly appreciate any opinions before parting with my hard earned cash.

Mine has from memory 100 fpt at 2 grand and 100 fpt at 5250 but only 102 HP at 5250 bat 6250 has 90fpt at rear wheel I do have the dyno chart .. I think 90 fpt was rated stock but that's at 3grand. Mines 120fpt at 3 .. Not as big as a stage 3 or 4. Can't use top under 120k. So end up in 4th or 5th most of the time ..lol.
