A little advice from the experienced

    Hi everyone,

    My Uncles friend has a 2002 883, about 10,000km on it - rarely used, and is offering it for sale to me - And I think he's a lot more reliable than the last 2 bikes I enquired about.

    In my down time I've been doing reading here and there.

    I read the thread on the 883-1200 hundred conversion & Im pretty impressed with the info that a big bore kit on a 883 will outperform a stock 1200. Im still going down the Brat/bobber route, The carby was always my intention, as there is less wires to hide for my 'themed' bike and the solid mount motor sounds like fun. With the said bike in mind, Im pretty keen on doing a motor upgrade, I just think it will be really nice to have that extra punch off the line in slim-lined lane splitter.

    If I were to prepare a shopping list for the engine conversion, what I would have would be:
    * NHRS 1250 Kit
    * Freely flowing Exhaust
    * Im assuming the Carby will need to be replaced or re-jetted

    The part Im a little confused on is
    * does the final belt drive gearing need to be changed?
    * If I want to put in Andrews N4 Cams is it necessary for me to have machine work done to the Heads or will the Stock 883 Heads suffice??

    Unrelated to engine mods can the sportster mag wheels from a 2002 model be swapped for spoked wheels 16 rear & 19 or 21 front?  would speedometer, brakes and rotors need replacing?

    I've just noticed there is two types of NRHS 1250 kit
    - Iron Lined Aluminum Cylinder
    - Axtell Cast Iron Cylinder

    Im guessing the cast iron cylinders would handle more abuse?
    would one type be more advantages over the other?

    One has better heat distribution, speak to NRHS they're brilliant!

     i use the cast iron barrels  we are doing a 2001 Buell 3. 13/16 " 88ci = 1450 c.c.  @ the moment ,  i have never brought barrels for 50c.c. more , save the bucks & use what you already have  1200 with a 0.020" rebore ?  good cams etc ,    if you are going to spend $ buy big bore , not small

     yes the Buell thunderstorm heads early type  do not know about the later 2002& up , early will fit as the Buell is a sporty motor just hotted up  they do run a 20 deg angle piston but i weld the side's of the squish shelf up & reshape to fit the sporty flat top piston  brings to about 9.6 comp as the 10 - 10.5 to 1  Buells use to ping (pinking ) on the Buell cam & have too retard the   ign timing's,     9.6 is good street comp , Buell heads have the bigger valves that you need & good ports  ,  we have a 1996 1200  sporty 9.6 comp  with 93 or 96 hp i can not remmeber either 1, but have to be carefull when welding the heads , or you could just fit Buell pistons  with decent cams ?  more comp  hard in traffic  i try too build bike's for the street inc hot days in traffic  because thats where we ride them sometimes,   some more than others

    sr497 and n4s are the same thing, and i'm pretty sure n6 and 536's are too, have a look at hammer performance, they've done some 560 and600 grinds that look great.

     hi , why buy  a set of barrels just too go 50 c.c. up when you can just bore  your own out too 1200 , on the later models 883 i think you need to buy barrels as you can not bore them that far out but it depends what year model 883 you have  , i would not buy barrels if you can bore your own  it's not worth the extra 50 c.c. you know if your going to buy barrels  you could buy big bore like 88 c.i.,   but it depends what year you have , as far as cams like N4 do not set the comp ratio high  is the key  8.8 c.ratio is enough all andrews cam's  + S/eagle are good as far as wear is concerned  just suit the cam choice to the comp ratio,  as what you what you want from the motor, medium normal  fast or faster fast ,    i like faster fast best

    Cheers guys. I've just had a look at the Andrews products page & also found an interesting thread on cams & 883 heads over on the XL forum. N6 looks suited to 1200-up with high-comp pistons & stock springs but perform a little higher in the rev range than N4's. SE497 bolt-ins seem recommended. SE536 grind seems out of the question without head work. Something to chew on...
