my 1998 883 sportster is running way too rich, wondering how to adjust carby so i can avoid having to take it to a mechanic. i pulled the spark plugs out that i put in 3 weeks ago and they are BLACK.

any help is appreciated

What brand of plug ? my sporty hates NGK leaves them black and sooty
If you need to adjust the mixture you will have to remove the blanking plug under the carb
to get to the screw

 idle jet should be a 45 size , main jet around 185 too 190 , mixture screw  3 turns out,   make sure the choke cable is all the way home with a little bit of free play  before you can pull it on  about 1 to 2 m.m. otherwise it's bleeding on ,  the stock white type aircleaner element is very restrictive  causing rich mixture , on to-days fuel you can not read the outside of the plug you must read the white porclien heat shield  around the electroid.  fuck i spell shit after i drink wine
