Check the service history and ask if it's a one owner bike. The electraglide ultra where brought by older guys who would look after there bikes. The EVO motors where well sorted by then and should be fairly trouble free. Check the rear lower frame rails for rust because the frames would let water in but not let it out and some rusted around that area. The brakes are very sad on those early tourers but the later fork legs and 4 spot brakes will bolt up. I have a 2007 bagger and at times wish I brought a early EVO Ultra and fitted a S&S 124 motor in it. I would check the normal stuff like on all bikes wheel bearings, steering head bearings, drive belt for holes, brake pads & rotors, lights, blinkers, etc etc. Start the bike when it's cold and see if she blows any smoke on warm up. Take the bike for a good ride and see how she handles and pull it through all the gears and rev range. Has the motor had any mods done like a stage 1 kit, air cleaner pipes etc. From the quick read I just done on these bike they sound very reliable. What sort of money are they asking for the bike ?

Thanks Hogbag and Trevster. The bike checked out pretty well including RWC but has one problem I need to sort out. Once running it is smooth as and restarting is no problem. But the bike was off the road for 3 years before I bought it and gives problems starting if its been left for a few days. Attempts at starting just give gackfiring, front plug wet with petrol, no proper firing, petrol pissing out of overflow. The advice I have had so far suggests the carb innards may be gummed up after being idle for so long. Does this check out? Whats the next step, pull off the Carby and clean it out?.

Sounds like the Carb need a good clean. After getting the carb sorted drain the engine oil if it smells like fuel because it sounds like the float level been jamming open letting fuel drain into the engine. The sooner the better as it can kill a good engine with the cylinders getting the oil washed out with raw fuel.
