    Hi all,

I had my 2010 WG in for it's 8k service the other week, all good, but a week later had to go back cos the rear wheel bearing died. Is this a common issue / has anyone else had this problem with the Dyna's.

How did it die? Did it lock up or was there any noise coming from it?

I noticed a clunking noise and went straight back to the work shop. They great took it in straight away to check it out and came back with the bearing - casing for the actuall ball bearings brocken up.

Thats dissapointing... would be a bugger on the open road and locking up. Is it poor maunufactoring of the bearing(cheap crap) or what do you think

it really sucks now, everything seems to cost us more when cheap and nasty parts are used--cheers Grim

My 2010 Fatboy Lo has had the front and the rear wheel bearings replaced. Shit quality bearings fitted from the factory. But they charge you a premium price when you buy a Harley

you can get the older style timikens from cbc bearings to fit in the 1 inch axles instead of the sealed ones bit of playin around with spacer in between but worth it in long run can pull bearings out each service an grease ect not like the shitty plastic ones standard

I picked my latest ride up from Queensland last year and was on my way home, got to sunshine coast and done a back wheel bearing at 110 kilowatts passing a truck.
Scary shit, mainly the sound of it. The thing is the bike had renegade wheels on it, which i found out later only had one bearing. Renegade does not admit the fault but
I know the later wheels have 2 bearings so i think they have found there fault and rectified it. $7000 bucks worth of damage. So they say. Swing arm,Pulley, shock, belt cover and wheel.glad i didn,t have to pay as it was bought from a dealer and they fixed it all

My 2008 Softail had a rear wheel bearing failure at 20,000 K's, ( under1,000 K's after a dealer fitted new rear tyre. )

Long story cut short...The dealer replaced the bearing with a new stock set, and charged me only for the bearings, no labour, as "GOODWILL"

I said and still say the reassembly after the new tyre was a root cause of the failure. I pointed out the mistakes made to them "nicely" !

Dealer Principal said to me at the time that "lots" of failures had been seen by them and it was NOT the fault of their service dept ??

The workshop foreman, (a wee English guy) had a go at me ( I'm Scottish FFsake...) so you can imagine how that went down !

Looking at 2009/2010 there have/has been changes to the rear axle, supposedly an "improvement"...

Previous 1997 Softail Custom 66,000 K's and still on original bearings , several tyre changes

Previous 2000 Deuce 1450 68,000 K's and still on the original bearings , several tyre changes

On my 2008 the spacers had been put in 180 degrees out, (they are "grooved" to show orientation )

I put it down to that, but maybe less than top quality bearings were a factor.

I've now done 33,000 K's and don't want them shitting themselves again !!

common problemwiththe later HDs. HD sent out a letter to dealers regarding the problem, they recommended all axles be torqued to a set spec.

Yeah, the old "correct torque to set spec" dealer bulletin.

I had printed it from the net ( ex-US of course) and took it with me to the dealer.

But the Pommy foreman " didn't need that , I've been a motorcycle mechanic for yonks yada yada..."

As soon as I was home I let the mufflers cool down and loosened and then re-torqued to spec EVERYHING around the back end !

Anal ? Well yeah probably but you get that !!

"Loud clicking clacking racket, I couldnt pin point it on the road, rolled it back and forth with no noise, nothing at idle, only when it started to move under power, thought it was in the primary".............. thats my exact story, not nice to hear that sound though i tell ya.

did not get hurt Etch just pulled her over as quick as i could in the middle island on the freeway cause was halfway round a truck when it happened.on the edge of the road for 3 hours, on my 40th birthday too. ha
