want advice/opinions - rebuild or transplant

guys looking on advice on what to do.  my confusion is based on some assumptions that im making so please clarify for me if im off track  -  im still getting used to the mechanical stuff

my 93 sporty shat itself about a month ago.  posted about that and what i found previously in a workshop thread.   basically looks as though it will need top end rebuild or at least some decent top end work.  have not taken the cylinder head off yet to see exactly what state the piston is in but from what i can see through the spark plug hole it looks pretty bad.    dragging my feet a little (been a tad preoccupied spending money - 02 rk will be leaving the us in a few weeks)

my confusion is due to buying a motor that i found on ebay.  its an 89 originally 883 but punched out to 1200.  it has only done 10k miles since being bored out.   the plan was to take the top end off this new motor & fit to my bottom end.  this was mainly due to the new one being 4 spd.  i have since been researching & seen its the lowest gear your losing so highway cruising wont change - the bit i was worried about.   but i also start thinking that surely there will be metal filings all the way through my bottom end now,  so that would all have to come apart & be washed.  that is correct yeah ?     so based on that assumption i start thinking it will be easier to just transplant the new motor.

i have pulled the tank off, which was pretty interesting in itself,  due to all the wiring that has been done previously.  it is absoulutely everywhere & i dont think half of it is doing anything.  i have already told the cuz whos a sparky,  that he is cleaning it all up for me.  im really starting to get this itch that everything needs to get re-done.  which i dont mind.  im thinking it is going to be fun.

would really like to hear peoples thoughts on which way they would go.  although i will have the other ride i am still wanting the sporty back on the road sooner than later - no massive rush though -  just so the old man can come for a ride with me while he can.

If it was my bike I'd rip the top end off the old engine and see how bad it is inside before I did anything else.  If there's not too much by way of bits and pieces of metal gone down into the bottom end I would replace the top end with the barrels, pistons etc off the new motor you bought.  Drain the oil and change the filter before starting it up.  Get it running then change the oil and filter a couple of times in the first few hundred km and it should be fine.

If however, there's lots of metal bits gone into the bottom end of the old donk I'd be inclined to swap the engines over completely.

If you're reasonable handy with a spanner and you've got a workshop manual it's not a hard job.  It's very rewarding when it's finished and you can crack a cold beer and a smile when it fires up!

I'd pull the motor down first may be lucky and find the valves\ foreign body have hammered shit out of the piston and not broke thru the crown
then you can see if you need a new head or new valves plus a std piston or oversize
good luck keep us posted and piccies we all like piccies

Get crackin on the spanners mate. might be the top land of the piston let go.

Dont muck about buying second hand engines to pull down to fix no 1 its an exercise in futility you are still going to have to hone the barrels freshen the heads etc any way.

At least rip the bloody head off its only 10 bolts and give us the piccies mate its a three stubbie job 1 to get the courage up second to get the job done and the 3 to calm the nerves to take the piccies

    Good luck with it Brucey

DON't buy the 1989 model engine you will be sorry even more,   as there the worst sporty motor ever built from 1986 to 1990 there a 4speed g/box anyway yours is a 5 spd  just fix what you have  it will last  as long as it's done the right way  not a shit job

thanks for your thoughts guys. brucey a lot of it does come down to me trying to psyche myself up to do it.

will continue with finding out exactly how bad it is in there as this will answer how much crap is through my bottom end. my preference is to swap the top ends but just wanted to see if you tech guru's where going to say, dont bother just do complete motor change.

Do ya self a favor lad wip the oil filter off cut the casing of with tin snips cut the paper away from inside filter, leave it folded up, stick it in the vice and press it , then take a look at paper , if metal went through motor it will be lodged in the paper if its clean stick a new top end on it and ride the sucker any metal in bottom end will stick in filter its the first test i would do if its got shit loads of metal you have shit loads of problem if its clean just go a new top end

so i have pulled the jug off also.  the rest of the psiton and pin looks clean and undamaged.  the cylinder itself does not looked scored too me but i would not know any different.  from what i can see there is not much shavings down below.  all looks very clean.   will post pics of the piston and jug soon.

fucking loving this pulling shit apart stuff

Chef mate the picture 4 th one down its lost the top land of the piston mate at the rear of the cylinder it would have been slapping its head off mate and then the bit of pistons got under the seat Whoooo nasty

Mate seen far worse that head will clean up a good head shop will weld up the big hits and clean it up just fine

I cant see from the pictures but it still looks as if its got the 883 size valves in it and where the pistons dished ??? i would think a trip to Harley developments / an engine builder of your choice / with a piston cyclinder head combo and sit down for a chat would be advisable

If the head has been relieved for straight 1200 pistons okay but have the 1200 valves been installed daddy racer will be able to confirm this he should have the sizes

Its all good mate clear the bench down and get ready fot the next stage

Can't wait for your gear to turn up to keep going with it. I don't know why, but I am quite confident that you can do this mate!
