Why the Evo is a better engine than your Twinklie

BC, the EVO was a good motor, But far from perfect.

the Twin Cam is also a good motor & yet again far from perfect.

in the end i don't think anything is perfect mate.

i'll tell you what i have seen. i've seen a heap of EVO's crack the cases between the rear lifter block & the barrel.  I had never seen one braek a crank pin till 4 years ago then saw 4 of them with broken crank pin's in a period on just over a year.

the good thing with the EVO is you can rebuild the bottom end, this would allow high quality rods if you had the coin.

i had my 01 Twin Cam slip the pin in the crank after around 80,000k very hard k's got a like new stock replacement set of flywheels & had the crank pin welded to stop slipping, all i can hope for is that my stock rods will stand up but with the stock TC 88 stroke being shorter there is less piston speed at a given rev, so i hope they last. when she was still a baby the stock chain tentioners fell apart, was just lucky to get it while all parts were still in cam chest. so got my m8 in USA to pick up some S&S Gear drive cams. i'm pretty happy with how she has stood up. if it breaks so be it.

this ( what i wrote about my personal ride ) is just a Dyna twin cam. if your compairing softails i would say the Twin Cam Softail heaps better, one of my riding & racing m8's road the Ring right out of a EVO softail, it was only an 80 incher, but it flew, trouble was high rev vibration everything would crack or fall off, he used to hold it together with plastic tyes.

a lot of stuff in that article I knew as I have rebuilt Evos from the ground up several times and they are bullet proof except for that bad batch of cases in the 90's Krash is referring to. The twin cam can be bullet proof to with welded and trued cranks, timkin bearings and gear drive cams and chuck the efi shit in the bin where it belongs. The twin cams are a far better ride if you are doing lottsa miles and long days.......no question and that is an opinion gained from riding shovels, evo,s and twin cams great article cooky

After reading that I am seriously thinking about keeping my Evo...It does everything I want it to do so maybe keeping up with the jones's isn't neccesary...

    Cheers...Sparra

Great read, thanks for posting!! My twin cam is getting on a bit, apart from cams, bearings and tensioners, she has been reliable. I like the fact I have a carbie, and don't have to stuff around with ECUs and maps and downloads....as he says, complicated!!

This has been going on for 60 years in the Harley world with flat heads, knuckle heads, pan heads, genny shovels, AMF shovels, block heads and now the fat heads (twin cams). The next engine will probably be called water heads and all us twin cam owners will be bagging them in 10 years. Its easy to make 100/100 with a TC motor with good heads, cams, pipe and tune. Don't get me wrong I would love a early shovel roadglide with a S&S 113 evo motor jammed in it for a bar hopper but I will keep the rubber mounted wobble glide for my long range tourer.

I won't bite 1 way or the other, but the last bit of the article sums it up -

"I mean, how often is it that you ask a man why his five year old bike only has 10,000 miles on it and he replies that he’s to busy working to ride"

"For in the end the only real question is: Did you enjoy your life more often than you didn’t? If the answer is yes then you died a very rich man."

I have ridden my old evo for years and will continue to do so. Simple reason is I know what is in that motor and I trust her to get me home.

i got my first harley at 16yr old an 49 frame with duo glide front end an a 56 pan in it had her for 10yrs rode it to broome from sydney in 79 / 80 an got a shovel ended up havin heaps shovels all the way up to 95 then got an evo had springers fxr an few other evos never had a twin cam but i reckon that they are a good motor but harley forgot to do it correct at the factory if they had of put either rebuildable flywheels like evos or even welded ones a billet oil pump gear drives and had a bit more done to heads they wouldve been gettin rave reveiws instead of pissed off ppl all over the world .i love all harleys but the evo is by far the best motor if ya want to own a bike that will get ya there n back again an not cost ya afortune to fix if something went wrong also the fact that they were carb modles mainly (were few injected ones ) which meant bein able to carry few bits so side of road tune could get ya goin again if ya break down now most need a tow (call me if ya up this way lol) an that will piss anyone off .if ya want a bike oops my bad if ya want a motor with the real old skool look ya cant beat the shovels or pans s&s make good ones but pull em down an regap it before ya ride seen em missing sopacers an few gaps were way wrong
all in all harleys have been here over the 100yrs so i still reckon they be here another hundred unless the gumbyment says bikes are to dangerous or they make em illegal so clubbies cant have clubs ect
we all have our favourites an we all see beauty in bikes that some cant as they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder ..thats why ppl modify their bikes different from others which is great seein we as humans are the only animals to be able to be individuals hey we all have a bag of jap bikes an they bag harleys we all bag stuff we may never have had our asses on but the bottom line is WE LIVE OUR LIFE THE WAY WE WANT ,WE RIDE WAT WE WANT AND RIDE WITH WHO WE WANT ..IT DONT MATTER WAT YA RIDE AS LONG AS YA RIDEING i only feel one thing when i see threads like this and its a feeling of sorrow knowin there are ppl that are in a hospital somewhere that will never be able to have the wind in their face again so next time ya out havin a ride an it pisses down or ya break down soare a thought for those who envy the fuck outta ya cause you are doin wat most crave in life BEING FREE

OL SKOOL you have summed it up, I have liked HD's for many years, but having ridden bikes for 35 years or more, only owned them for the past few years. WLA's. Pan's, Knuckle's, Shovel's, Evo's, Twin Cams or whatever, who gives a fuck as long as you are riding and enjoying the living shit out of what you are doing.... let's not worry about being petty.... I give a nod to every bike going the other way and if they don't nod back.. care factor of zero from me, I'm having a ball!!!

and I know they are not in chronological order..... for the petty ones...

Well said guys. A good ride does wonders to a persons soul. A ride, not a drive. Especially for those that CAN ride. Not fucked up forever/too old or something else. It makes me wonder how long riders are going to be around on this planet, before sickles are barred, like someone said. Yeah, do it while ya can.
