BC, the EVO was a good motor, But far from perfect.
the Twin Cam is also a good motor & yet again far from perfect.
in the end i don't think anything is perfect mate.
i'll tell you what i have seen. i've seen a heap of EVO's crack the cases between the rear lifter block & the barrel. I had never seen one braek a crank pin till 4 years ago then saw 4 of them with broken crank pin's in a period on just over a year.
the good thing with the EVO is you can rebuild the bottom end, this would allow high quality rods if you had the coin.
i had my 01 Twin Cam slip the pin in the crank after around 80,000k very hard k's got a like new stock replacement set of flywheels & had the crank pin welded to stop slipping, all i can hope for is that my stock rods will stand up but with the stock TC 88 stroke being shorter there is less piston speed at a given rev, so i hope they last. when she was still a baby the stock chain tentioners fell apart, was just lucky to get it while all parts were still in cam chest. so got my m8 in USA to pick up some S&S Gear drive cams. i'm pretty happy with how she has stood up. if it breaks so be it.
this ( what i wrote about my personal ride ) is just a Dyna twin cam. if your compairing softails i would say the Twin Cam Softail heaps better, one of my riding & racing m8's road the Ring right out of a EVO softail, it was only an 80 incher, but it flew, trouble was high rev vibration everything would crack or fall off, he used to hold it together with plastic tyes.
After reading that I am seriously thinking about keeping my Evo...It does everything I want it to do so maybe keeping up with the jones's isn't neccesary...
Cheers...Sparra
Great read, thanks for posting!! My twin cam is getting on a bit, apart from cams, bearings and tensioners, she has been reliable. I like the fact I have a carbie, and don't have to stuff around with ECUs and maps and downloads....as he says, complicated!!
i don't mind eating toasted cheese sanger's in the morning even with tomato sauce , it's the breakfast of champion's , but you have too eat them upside down because the taste buds are on the top of your tounge if you know what i mean, have a good weekend
Well said guys. A good ride does wonders to a persons soul. A ride, not a drive. Especially for those that CAN ride. Not fucked up forever/too old or something else. It makes me wonder how long riders are going to be around on this planet, before sickles are barred, like someone said. Yeah, do it while ya can.
