G'day All,
I am awaitng delivery of an '08 FXD and am trying to decide on pipes to suit. I am liking the look of V&H Big Radius (especially as I can get them for the price of short shots fitted at the dealer) and would like to hear opinions from the knowledgeable crowd.
I am also curious about fitting. I have read the how-to on the V&H site for the short shots and it seems easy enough for me...... even though my motorbike mechanical ability is confined to keeping the big chook chaser in the shed running. Any advice would be muchly appreciated.
Cheers,

Easy to insall if you have right tools... 3/4" socket set from memory (1/2" wont fit the gaps to remove the exhaust). I installed the V&H Short Shot Staggard. The removal and installation was done following the instructions that came with the pipes. At the time had no HD Maintenance Manual. The instructions lists the tools required. Remeber to clean all marks (fingerprints) from the new pipes before starting the bike. I use the PCIII fuel controller instead of the Fuelpack from V&H. It comers with O2 elimninators. Cannot remeber if Fuelpack has eliminators or works with O2 sensors. Rather keep the O2 sensors, I put blanking plugs in. Remember the comments other make in threads above anti-seize and the gasket. The gasket was a tight fit so didn't need any compound.
I purchased pipes and PCIII from MorePower Racing... great price.
Cheers for the advice folks, will be buying the Big Radius and fitting myself for sure. Next stop - earplugs for the trip to Melbourne
Hey come on there... your old man is not that bad
Wish I could join you guys but looks like I will be caging it to Adelaide with my sons effects and daughters scooter around 5th.
I did consider the CB intercom......... for about 10 seconds. Plenty of time to talk shit when enjoying a few beers later on. Plus, i need to leave space for the radar detector!!
G'day Top Bloke
It is pretty simple to do the install. I put a Python 2into1 (made by V&H) on my 07 FXDC along with a thundermax autotune and K&N 3909 air kit. I hadn't done any bike work prior and only had basic toolkit after accumulation over 10 or so years. I would recommend you get the service manual and read instructions from the manufacturer of replacement parts all the way through and understand them prior to beginning. If you can get a 2nd, or even 3rd pair of hands , it would also be advantageous. I would highly recommend the tmax, it is awesome, no dyno time - ever. It adjusts as you ride and only gets better. I also needed to get actuators eliminators for air intake and active exhaust. Big Joes Choppers is the go for them (sponsors of this site).
I bought all my gear off the net from the states. Most of it from a sponsor of the US HDForums site, very reliable and speedy, one package actually took more time to get from sydney to Goulburn (<200k's on Hume Hwy and major rail link) than it did from Marylands (US East coast) to Sydney. Chuck in the super high $aus and you dead set can not go wrong. You end up getting a tmax and pipes for the price of the pipes alone, or the tmax for what you would pay for a PCIII, and as I said no dyno time and you can stay clear of the dealers clasp at the same time!!!
I really reckon most people can do these change outs, and it gives you a great feeling of satisfaction. Good luck, and let us all know how you go.
If you do have a go, and need to know anything, these forums (here and the US site) are great places of reference, plenty of people who have done the same thing you'll be doing, and they are ready and willing to share their experiences.
Trusty
hey Uncle Ho, which pc3 map did you use for your setup? can't see one for the short shots only big shots and big radius?
Cheers Trusty, I reckon i'll get the manual as well prior to delivery.
The Big Radius pipes are on the way, karlrockdrain has supplied the seat and sissybar (cheers), rack and fixing type equipment is on its way from the states and a DTT is on the way from England (I am too tight to pass it up in favour of a Thundermax cos i got it a fair amount cheaper!).
All I need now is a bike to bolt all the crap to!!! Lets hope that the boat doesn't sink.......
Gday Trusty1
I read your reply and got inspired . Iam going to the US in December and I will have a set of V&H Short shots, auto tune Thundermax and a kuryakyn corsair air cleaner waiting for
me to bring back to Bris. I want to throw them on a 08 Street Bob. Might try it myself. I was wondering if I could tick tack with you via email during the process if I have any questions or trouble.
Let me know if thats ok mate
Cheers
