Mechanic needed: that can troubleshoot PCV + Autotune kit

    Hi,

I have a 2010 Iron 883, V&H Staggered Short Shots, HD Heavy Breather with the Power Commander V and Autotune kit

I've called several of the dealers and they will only work with the SERT. I want to get my bike Dynotuned as I'm having a few issues with the canned map.

Can anyone recommend a good mechanic familiar with the Power Commander V in the Sydney area that can Dyno the bike?

    Thanks

With the downloaded map the bike runs a little rough especially at low revs 1st - 2nd gear as i move through traffic. Not the best take off either but is ride-able.

When i enable the autotune the bike runs really bad. On start-up the bike revs up and down as if it can't find a steady idle. When i rev the bike and release the accelerator it continues to rev up on its own before dropping.

Once the bike warms up and i take off the low end stutter is very noticeable. 1st and low 2nd gear are the worst affected. I notice what sounds like popping from the engine and at one stage the bike nearly stalled as if it didn't have enough fuel. Maintaining a steady idle is hard at low speeds (under 40km/hr)

Over 40kms/hr the bike smooths out and tends to accelerate a lot better but the popping on deceleration is really bad.

I've disable the autotune as i don't understand why it seems to almost amplify the issues with the canned map.

    Hey,

I'm running Vance and Hines Staggered Short shots with the Harley Davidson Heavy Breather. Using map:  15-009-006- Vance & Hines short shots staggered Screamin' Eagle air filter Stock ECM  which i downloaded from the Power Commander website as it's the closest match for my setup. i've tried reapplying the map and actually did it again last night when i took screen shots of the setup.

It's been pretty frustrating so far.

First the store sent the wrong PCV model so it didn't fit the bike, I had to send that back then get a replacement. Once that was installed i noticed the Autotune had a frayed wire in the wiring loom near the base of the unit so that had to go back for warranty repair. I now got the replacement module installed and still having issues.

It's gotten to the stage where my level of technical knowledge has been exceeded and also my patience  so i figured it was time to find someone who can possibly show me if i've done something wrong or if it just needs a Dyno run and reconfiguration. I checked the Power Commander site for placed they recommend to dynotune here is Sydney but none of the places listed will work with the unit. They just state that they are listed because they have a Dyno machine.

Pretty slack response if you ask me but maybe the PCV is not as popular here as in the US or Harley are purposely boycotting any other tuner to push their own.

    Hi,

I took the bike to get dynotuned at the Trivett Harley Davidson in Alexandria, after paying $250 to the dealer  the bike actually came back worse than when i took it in. The Dyno map is near identical to the first run. They also managed to scratch the side cover in the process.

He reckons he was able to get me 1 HP improvement (this may have been due to the new spark plugs he installed.) but the flat spot on take off is actually worse. It's so severe that i am now forced to ride the clutch on every take off otherwise i run the risk of the bike stalling.

There is a popping noise from the bike almost like a small backfire from the engine only happens when i go to accelerate from standstill.

I just refuse to believe the Power Commander V and Autotune kit are actually this bad. If the dealer spent as much time actually fixing my bike than he did trying to sell me the SERT i think i'd enjoy riding my bike and not contemplating going back to a carby run bike.

I contacted Thundertech like you suggested and Deano got in me in touch with Mark the DynoJet Technical Manager who has recommended Explosive Racing in Peakhurst not far from where i live to help sort out the issues.

I'll give them a buzz in the morning and hopefully they can help.

    Thanks Guys.

Spray some WD around the intake flanges to see if the revs go up. Sounds like you could have leaking intake seals. Also check the exhaust flanges as there could be cold air getting in the system causing your problem with tuning

    Hi All,

Thanks for your suggestions so far.

DynoJet put me in touch with Zak from Explosive Racing. He was flat out with other work and custom bikes but after hearing the amount of grief i had experienced in the past he opened his shop on Saturday and worked on the bike for most of the day. He kept me updated throughout the day and by 3pm the bike was ready to go.

He found several basic things the guys at Trivett HD had not done so could not have performed a proper tune. For instance the throttle had not been zero'd in so was sitting at 2% throttle on idle and jumping between the two map settings on idle. Also looks like Trivett didn't install their own sensors when tuning the base map and they may have tried taking a reading from the exhaust end which would have given an incorrect reading as there are baffles installed;  it's not a straight through pipe. This is just naming a couple of the issues.

    End Result : Amazing!

After Explosive Racing had finished the work i took the bike for a test ride and, it's smooth throughout the rev range no matter what gear i was in. It's alot more responsive when accelerating and on idle the bike sits quietly purring like it should or as close to "purring" a Harley can get

I couldn't be happier with the work perfromed by Zak in his workshop.

Thanks again to everyone for their help.
