Hi , My bike is a 2009 FLHT Electra Glide Standard, 96 ci .  Upgraded H&V's pipes, upgraded air filter, only. My question is regarding tunning and and having bike running at optimal performance with upgrades listed. At this time I am happy with the bike, and see no further upgrades requried.  I've read about buying this tuner and that tuner, maps for this upgrade  and that upgrade, changing settings on the computer, (most of us have trouble using our mobil phone) ,dyno tunes, (some don't like motor being over extended), etc, etc.  I'm not after getting extra hp or extra touque, I'm happy with the basic bike .  I love the bike , as well as keeping the bike clean and maintained, and in good nick , I would like to be confident that I have the engine performing the way it should , without wasting my money and time on items I don't really need.  So gentleman with experience and knowledge, what's your low down on this.  Regards , Mark

MArk, first thing if you have changed the pipes and A/C both to free flowing then the bike is going to run very lean. They come lean from the factory due to emissions etc, you taking off the exhaust and putting on V&H ( Are they Loud) and a free flow Air Filter? ( Type) have now made the bike run even leaner due to less restrictions in the intake and exhaust. The ECU can compensate for small variations, Pipes but not both. The ECU needs to be re mapped to compensate for the changes you have made to the bike. It might be running well in your eyes but, you are doing some damage to the engine due to it's lean AFR, it will be hot as hell. If you don't intend to get into the DIY stuff at least spend some money on a Dyno. Yes it will cost a bit but you bike will run a lot better, and a lot cooler, Once you have the Dyno you won't have to do anything else as far as tuning unless you make more changes to the engine that would affect the tune.

Thanks AJ56,  They are V&H, and they are loud, (not over the top).  Filter is free flow.  I bought bike second hand ,through dealer about 1 month ago. I assume the previous owner had it tuned for these upgrades. If he did not , is there anyway i can tell if the bike was tuned with these upgrades . Thanks Mark

Ah. Depending on what the previous owner done. He could have an after market tuner installed on the bike. Cobra, SEII Tuner, There are so many out there it would be hard to say. Have a look under the seat for something that is hooked up to the ECU. If nothing there then he may have had the bike done at the dealer with an updated map. There is no real way to tell if he has had a map uploaded without hooking up to the ECU.

As a guess I would think the previous owner would have had something done.

When you go past the dealer drop in and ask them, they should be able to tell you what has been done.

Ring the dealer you brought the bike from and ask what's on the HD record base regarding if the the bike was tuned with a SEPST.

Thanks everyone that have responded.  All good common sense.  Just one more for the novice. Well say bike is mapped correctly with the upgraded's that are installed. All things being equal, will the bike (engine), retain it's tune without any more tinkering, (of course , plugs , filter, and fluids, to be serviced at there correct intervals).  I suppose my questions is,  after dyno tune and mapped correctly, how many kms in your opinion will the bike need to be checked (dyno tune) again? If at all !!     PS .  I sometimes go where all the experts are locally, (the Pub), and they have all different opinions on everything, after being on this forum , I'll have to take them a little easy, or they'll think I'm a 'Smart Arse'.  Regards Mark.

yep once the bike has the correct map there is nothing more to be done. It will only need another map if you change something,? Cams, different pipes, big bore kit etc... Normal service items do not affect the tune of the bike. As far as how long the tune lasts. Well with normal wear and tear 5 yrs maybe. It depends on how you ride the bike. How many K's on the clock when the tune was done. Was a really good tune done or was it just an upload of a canned Map.
