Got pulled over yesterday by the Highway Patrol on High Street in Preston. They pulled me over because of my Helmet looking a little tight on the sides. Officer checked sticker on the back and also lable matched on the inside. All good but he then told me that he got 3 people yesterday with non compliance helmet - a fine and 3 points. Didn't even look at the bike. :)

I hear ya Herne-- I bought a top class Arai a few years ago in Singapore when I worked over and there and the Singapore gov has a compliance system in place as well. They have testing that is as rigid as our system complete with a similar sticker but different shape and color.
Shame that our system doesn't have a mutual agreement clause that would allow perfectly good, top notch quality helmets tested overseas to the same or similar standard to be used here.

I can't understand why approved helmets in the US, Europe and Japan shouldn't be allowed here? I get that some underdeveloped countries have piss poor standards but I think it might have something to do with protecting the Australian market rather than safety.

A mate got done recently. 3 points and a fine. His helmet is one of those sus looking very thin open faces. He tried talking his way out of it, cop told him save your breath mate, we know all the tricks and all the excuses.

I'll put the black hat on....if you go arse up and end up with serious injuries, not just head injuries and the hemet is not AS compliant and your or the other parties insurance company finds out, you can kiss a pay out good bye

    Just sayin

Don't get me wrong, I too have 2 helmets that are DOT approved and are very comfortable and excellent quality. I use them for putting around town.

So how do you get a helmet compliant, how much would it cost a who do we lobby? Got to be a loopole out there somewhere.

Saw a cop in a bike shop here the other day arguing with the owner of the shop as to why he should spend the extra for a good helmet.
Cop was saying "oh...I only intend using it for short trips (wanting the cheap helmet)".

after looking on various govt. web sites below is about the only info I could find
and it all relates back to www.crash.org.au

When should I replace my motorcycle helmet?

You need to replace your helmet if it has been involved in a crash. If it's been properly taken care of and hasn't been involved in a crash or another impact, it should be replaced approximately once every five years, or every three years if used regularly. Helmets are made of materials which will deteriorate with time, heat and humidity. Hair oils, body fluids and cosmetics also contribute to helmet degradation. Petroleum-based products present in cleaners, paints, fuels and other common materials may also degrade materials used in many helmets, possibly degrading performance.
