Just did some close ups of some older photos. Looks like I've been riding this way for a very long time.

Cant see any type of seal either

OK the late dyna's have a shit top  dust seal & need there steering bearing cleaned  check & grease more often than you would think , i use trailer water proof grease in them because that silly seal let's water in ,so don't wash your bike hard , esp around this part of the bike  +  wheel bearings etc , it's not a seal that goes over the outside like the early models  it's a shit design ?,    but as long as you know , iv'e seen  steering bearing stuffed @ 16,000 klm's  on the  late dyna's  there is a slight lower step @ the back of the frame as you can see in the pic there as well  + the dust shield fit's inboard of the frame  with a 2mm gap . so it realy act's like a funnel for the water , if in dought just put in new bearings  , maybe  ( ALL BALLS BEARINGS ) have a fix for this,        but  i don't know what the factory was thinking  the gay guy that designed that part  was having a bad hair day , because it wan't designed by a motorcycle rider thats fore-sure
