I have just spent friday night putting on new bars and doing the internal wiring, but this little project has highlighted a stupid design flaw with the superglide tanks.
To remove the tank, apart from the bolts and hoses, there is two sets of wiring to disconnect, one set has a plug hidden under the tank, which can be disconnected when you pull the tank back, but the other set don't.
To disconnect it you have to remove the centre trim to get to it.
This has caused me a problem tonight, when I put on the chromed trim on last year, I put a little loctite on the four bolts around the fuel gauge. When I tried to remove them , it is clear that the brass inserts in the plastic is spinning. so I can't remove the trim, bugger... so I had everything else disconnected except for the last set of wiring which I couldn't disconnect because I couldn't remove the trim.
SOLUTION
A pair of wire cutters and cut the wiring half way along, I will be puting in a connector so I don't have dismantle the whole tank just so I can remove it...what a stupid idea...why didn't harley just do this in the first place , it could have been hidden under the tank like the first one
And while I am at it, I will be looking for a quick release hose connector for that bloody balance hose at the front of the tank , you need three hands to disconnect it without getting fuel everywhere.
