I think it depends; if its not being used - sell it, if you still enjoy taking it for spin - keep it! Like everything mass produced; it is definitely a depreciating asset, however the sporties tend to reach the $9k - $10k mark and flatten out for a few years. I'm planning to keep mine regardless of my next bike is; its the first HD I've owned, I love it and I've spent hours making it what i wanted; i doubt anyone else will appreciate that!

can't see you getting 11k for an 883 at the moment, but if you're not riding it, let the rego lapse, put it on bikesales and a trickle charger, and see if anything happens.

Turn it into a project if you can afford to keep it. You can do so much with the sporties....

Best thing to do with an 883 is big bore it, put a 1200 bare bones kit in for around $1000 and use it as a drag bike around town.  I've done it twice now and it's like getting a new bike.  Also take the tins off and spray them matt black.

I contemplate selling mine sometimes too! But like mentioned earlier it does everything I want. Every 2nd person I know is buying a new harley at the moment so no doubt there will be a flooded market (buyers market) down the track. Sell it while you have the chance- cut the loss. But I'm keeping mine!

I hadn't thought of the customising option when I voted to sell it. I was looking at it from the 'relatively new Sportie with low kliks' angle, but as ya point out, prices are crap right now.

Gotta agree on the versatility of the Sportie for customising purposes. So I'll do a Julia here and go back on what I said... if selling isn't a necessity, keep it and let the rego run out and take as long as ya like to turn it into an evil beastie or Rat Bike or whatever mods butter ya cracker.

Then create ya self an alter ego on here, a new member called 'Bad Trev' and ... never mind, I'm getting ahead of myself.

    Keep and customise. Why not?

    A good decision there, Enforcer.

Wish I'd been able to keep some of my old bikes - even some of the jappers would be good to take out every now and again.

Yep. The bevel bikes keep their value when bought used as well as the odd belt drive .The f1's have a 2nd hand asking price of more than twice what they originally sold for new. But these bikes are more than 25 years old ,you cant walk into the showroom and still buy em.
I have a dook sitting in the shed that cost 22 grand in 2001 ,it wouldn't get 10 today. Even the used value plummets the more owners that a bike has had. Not complaining bout the used prices of dooks, i'm just surprised at the Harley's ability to hold their worth. pleasantly.

Agreed jjm; someone else mentioned Harleys still bring a good price compared to other brands. That's true, though they're down on the $$$ they used ta bring - but still and always way better than any Japper.

All good Trev; in the 'Harrassment' thread you'd posted 'I'm gone' as 'enforcer' and the zero post count had me thinking you'd left the forum, emigrated to South America and was breeding a new race of Nazis... Funny how the mind works when ya flooded in and suckin' on a cask of Fruity Lexia, ay?

Yeah, when i bought the Softail I said that the Sporty (97 1200 Custom) had to go. Three years later, still have the Sporty, great little bike.
