    Hi All,

slowly sorting my bike out  ( 87 heritage softail )

    BUT

I need to get rid of the whistle from 80K's upwards, it's driving me mad

think it's in the headlight or around that area somewhere,

    anyone else had this problem

    regards Stumpy

Does it start at the 80km and stay as you increase your speed or fade off?

the early g/box was a bit on the whining side of noises they sorted it out in 1996,   but i would check the box oil , pulley's etc , pri chain tension  1st  +  wheel bearings  F/R all the important thing's  1st ,   then you know what your bike con'd is like anyway

Btcha it's the headlight bezel...... Try putting foam in around the bezel to see if that takes the bugger away

Macka71 I tried putting one finger in my ear but it was still there,

Daddyracer, when i first got the bike I dumped all oils, gearbox, primary, engine and forks
first thing I do when I get a second hand bike, peace of mind

AJ56, your right on the money, it is coming from the headlight, or cowling
I was hoping someone had a exact place that is was, but yes will start around the headlight with weathershield tape

    thanks

Could try a little clear silicon in the gap of the head light clamp ring, and look for any gap / hollow section that could catch wind like edge of bezel / cowling at forks, put duc tap over than go for ride to test. Post a pic of front section.

Have you tried changing helmets, not as silly as it sounds.

That is more than likely the Primary chain.  Just settling in and will tension up as the chain stretches and the adjuster jumps up a knotch.

Put a pillowcase or two over the headlight and go for a ride - at least you'llknow if its the light. If so, stick on some tape, a section at a time, to see where its coming from.

1987 is a manual pri chain adjuster have you check the slack on the chain , these early models have a noisey g/box that howls/whines esp in 3rd & 4th,    if this bike has only 16,000 klms & is 25 yrs old that is less than 750 klms a year ,    the pri chain should have about 1/2 inch slack cold  or a bit less hot but not tight i always check the pri chain hot as then you know what its doing @ opperating temp

Went for another ride last night and played with the headlight,
there seems to be 2 whistles
one from the headlight which I will fix with extrusion tape ( door double sided tape )
and the other is from the bottom of the cowling,

so getting closer to the problem
