Burned starter - Crap

Got a 2010 FXDWG and the starter/battey died last weekend.

Removed the battery and leads and applied the jumper leads directly to the starter terminal and engine earth . Turned ignition on and pressed the starter swirch. The starter relay began clicking and ocasionally the motor turned, but very slowly. The earth connection got so hot it started smokin. Pulled the starter out and could see some of the copper coils around the magnet were black.

Anyone else got a similar problem

It shouldn't wind over just by earth and main starter stud, there is still the coil terminal on the starter too. This needs to be bridged from the positive stud (not hard wired) to get it to wind over. Have heard of starter relays latching on, causing the starter to engage when riding (that will cook the starter). Trying to start a bike with a flat battery will f@@@ a starter real quick too.

Did the battery feed and main fuse feed stay together? Been sitting for awhile? It's a bugger when these things happen, sounds like your on the right track.
