hi all WTF  went for a ride north side today had an unmarked cop car drive up beside me an saw cop in pass side taking photos of me has anyone encounterd this again WTF

Police regularly do what's called a street check. This forms the foundation of their general intelligence services. Street Checks come in a variety of shapes and sizes, commonly they are used when a police team are cruising their local streets and want to ascertain what certain people are up to.

Basically they will ask you a series of questions, you are under no obligation to provide anything other than your name and address, and proof of both if called upon. There is a common law rule that states a citizen is under no legal duty to assist police in their enquiries, this is supported by statutory law (s. 9 CLAA, 54 and the Police Powers & Responsibilities Act & Regulations, generally).

During these street checks, police can use their ordinary powers of observation to note your location, your features, demeanour, etc. etc. etc. this is all logged in the computer system when the team return to the station. If for example a burglary occurred in a particular area and the logs showed they had spoken and identified a few people in that general vicinity - you have your first suspects or leads..

My guess is they were performing essentially a street check on you without pulling you over - they would have logged your rego, location and direction of travel, if you were wearing insignia of a MC, and other identifying features to form a basic intelligence report. My second guess is that there was a glaringly obviously defect on your bike, they photographed it and will be sending you a ticket (as the registered owner of the bike)...

Those are my two guesses, strictly speaking, it's not illegal. There is no right to privacy as the Americans have it in Australia.
