    Hi Bisonlee,
Harley changed the taper of the crankpin, pinion and motor sprocket shafts and consequently the taper of the holes in the flywheels for the 1982 model year. If yours is an 81 you have the older set-up.

The new set-up (82) lasted till the Shovel's demise in 84. I believe it was the set-up used in the early Evo's.
In 82 harley also got a brainstorm and decided that the top-end needed extra draining, so the cylinders had a hose fitting that connected them to the lifter bases.(really weird shit, someone was on something.) They also decided to give the valves guides seals, which was in fact a good idea. (can be retrofitted to earlier models ) My 81 Shovel had Manley s/s valves and the guides and seals, never regretted the change, I also split the rocker feed line and plugged the rear stock inlet with a 1/8 plumbers plug and fed both rocker covers from the middle, (the transfer line between front and rear in the stock set-up.) Be careful too about oil pump changes, in 81 they changed body and gaskets, although the outer cover remained the same. This mainly affected FLH-80,FXS, FXB and FXWG. In the electrical side the alternator rotor-stator-regulator set with more output. Also they changed the carby to one that had the mixture screw plugged up, so you didn't play with it. this was also the year plastic breather gears started up.
Nil Desperandum ( Don't let the bastards get you down.)
