I have an '81 Sturgis that I've had from the crate. Had a rebuild in 2010. Check out the thread with a pic of what a Sturgis should look like.

if your buying it to rebuild and sell for a profit you should stop smoking the good shit because that will not happen,as Dave says if it runs 5k for a complete shovel with good numbers previously reg`d in Oz = bargain, if you rebuild it properly and maintain it correctly you will have a good bike for around the 10k mark, thats if you do the work yourself, if you farm out the work and have it done half assed you will end up with a pig that only gives shovels a bad name, owning a shovel is not for everyone and you must spend hours tinkering to keep them reliable, keeping up with twincams and evos everyday is a fantasy, buy it enjoy it and be prepared to curse it some days.
Buying an old bike from a friend can ruin a friendship if all you do is bitch about the bad deal you got or they bitch about how you screwed them on the cash, agree on a fair price and never discuss the deal again with anyone. FWIW 5k is fair if it starts
