hey all,
just wondering if fitting any of the following will void the new bike warranty
complete exhaust system, not just mufflers, eg: V&H short shots,
air cleaner such as ness big sucker
and a pc3 tuner
thanks guys, exactly what i was thinking, not a big deal to swap back.
Cheers
OK, so lets say I get a new HD and don't want the dealers brand of pipes as I want V&H but the dealer doesn't sell them. I go to another outlet and have them fitted by experienced HD mechanics. Can the dealer then reasonably argue the void-warranty issue?
If so, then this sucks.
If THEY can't give me a way to get what I want, knowing that V&H are a pretty serious HD exhaust supplier, then why the f**k would anyone buy another Harley?
Considering that HD seem to have gone "new-age" and don't want to sell their bikes with "possibly-illegal" pipes I reckon this problem will become VERY common.
I followed a very cool-looking 105th bronze and black V-rod the other day for some time. Stunning machine. Even with my radio turned down I couldn't hear the pipes!! If it's quiet, it ain't a Harley!
I got my new 03 bike with excellent SE LOUD pipes and no complaints anywhere.
Sorry for ranting!
And this is the very dilemma I'm in at the moment.
Very, very, very limited in outlets for pipes etc. 1 dealer in Darwin. New bike, still in warranty and very quiet. So quiet I can't hear what gear I'm in. I need to buy a tacho to know what the motor is doing.
I was looking at V&H short shots(??? anyway the ones similar/same to Crashers and Rats) When I bought the bike and enquired about the pipes (come to think of it not sure what brand they were. maybe screamin eagles for all I know) and warranty issues etc. They said all would be fine if they supplied and fitted.
I went through the; 'I'll buy 'em cheaper and fit 'em myself' syndrome but they informed me I would also need a high flow air filter and Harley tune otherwise she would cough and fart and carry on. So I can't really put em on, take em off for services either!!!!!!!
What do ya do?
My prob is that I will be fitting the gear myself, plenty of history working on vehicles and am in the mechanical trade (fitter & turner) so will just have to remove at service time, at least in the 2 year warranty period....
Hey OSP, it would be great and very fair for all parties if we had the same system that you have in the US. It's only reasonable that the dealer doesn't want "backyarders" messing with bikes that they have to cover under warranty. However, there are excellent HD workshops and mechanics out there and some will presumably some sort of academic recognition for their experience. It is in HD's interest to support these people and not to condemn everything that they do or touch.
It's clear that Daggs and Magilla both want to buy V&H pipes for their bikes. Why the hell doesn't the local dealer make it easier for them by offering to acquire the pipes and fit them. They could even charge a few bucks more but they would retain the respect of the customer into the future. Many of us don't have the time or the experience to fit and re-fit pipes and ECU's just to keep the dealership happy when it comes to service time.
We spend over 30 Grand on a bike and get treated like schoolboys!!........ (and girls!)
Maybe the dealer is expressly forbidden to fit non-HD accessories. If so, then why not simply tell us! At least we can try and understand their situation.
I have to admit that I'm getting pretty pissed off with this whole bad attitude of many dealers and it is beginning to affect my admiration of the brand much more than I thought it would.
If I buy a Holden, the dealer wants me to have him service it or threatens to withold warranty. In fact, they can't, providing the car is serviced by a registered mechanic. Why else would they bother have a system of registering mechanics?
Why then should an HD dealer be allowed to refuse warranty providing work has been done by a "registered" or professional Harley workshop.
It makes you begin to understand how some of these smaller workshops are possibly held down by the big guys.
I bought my bike from Frasers in 03. I have never had a problem in over 33,000km. I only had the first 3 services done by them as it's so far away from me and I personally think they charge a bit too much. I am possibly one of the lucky ones as I didn't have any warranty issues.
I have heard lots of badmouthing about them and have always jumped to defend them based on the fact that they have never done me any wrong. Many Perth buyers deal with Bunbury HD who apparently have a better customer-relationship from what I have heard. Personally, I would still prefer to deal with Frasers. I have heard many complaints about non-availabilty of new bikes. I think this is simply down to importing and the problems that come with it. I don't blame them for not knowing exactly what and when will arrive. They would have no control over the US distribution network. This is the real world where Australia is responsible for only approximately 1% of Harley's world sales. The US is hardly gonna jump through hoops just because Oz wants more bikes!
This does not give any justification for dudding genuine customers who simply want to customise their new ride into the dream machine that they have waited so long for.
If I have a hard time with my new bike as and when it arrives, it may well be the last one.
cheers

The subject of pricing we pay for in Oz is taking a pounding.
The problem is that sometimes Frasers don't add just a few bucks to the price. A set of pipes that cost $US600 with manufacturer costs $A1200 at Frasers. A search of the internet locates US outlets willing to sell for below recomended list, like $US500. Freight would be $US200.
MSRP US$60.00 from HD sells for $A110 in Perth. Other items I looked at when the exchange rate was 0.75 calcuated to 30% margin on MSRP. So it comes down to how much you are willing to fork out.
On the subject of licenced/approved outlets... very difficult to control in such a small market in the world.
Streetbob, I was not aware of that and sincerely apologise to them for suggesting otherwise. I have spoken to several guys with new bikes and all had their V&H's fitted at Supercycles which matched with what I had heard elsewhere. Thus the similar discussion about warranties.
On the one hand you have a 100% warranted bike that runs nowhere near its potential and you have very limited options to get it to look or run the way you want.
OR
You have an unwarranted bike that runs sweetly, sounds and looks how you want it to.
Damned if you do and damned if you don't.
Surly
If you change the pipes, carburetor it pretty much void the warranty.
The V-twin is such a good engne who cares about a warranty?
