Hey all,
This is my first DIY. I didn't see another thread on how to do it, and took the liberty of making one myself. Foremost, my apologies for the simplicity of the DIY. I wrote this up because: 1) It's raining and miserable on the roads [I got drenched]; 2) This modification is popular, and a lot of new Iron riders will want to do this in the future; and, 3) Because this is simply too easy to pay HD or someone else to do it for you.
Without further aideu:
What you will need:
Time:
Tools:
Step 1: Remove Mirrors
This is obviously very simple. For the right mirror use the socket-wrench. You will notice if you try with the left mirror, The left-side indicator is in the way. Use the spanner at this stage, and simply screw off the left mirror.
Step 2: Place mirrors somewhere safe
Place the mirrors somewhere safe. Note the mirror assembley includes a lock nut and washer for each side.
Step 3: Loosen left indicator:
As noted before, the left indicator is in the way - you will not be able to place the former right mirror back there without damaging paint as the length of the mirror shaft is too long.
To loosen the left indicator, simply insert the hex-head allen key into the hole as shown and give it a small twist, you don't need to remove it, you just want to give it the ability to be angled out of the way:
Step 4: Replace your mirrors upside-down
Take it easy, but replace your mirrors in their upside down position. Re-thread the washers and bolts and tighten them. Importantly DO NOT overtighten the mirrors - we still need to do a trial-fit and adjust to ensure maximum rear visability. Use the socket-wrench.
Left side:
Right-side:
You will note your brake-cables (2 of them) are in the way of a direct fit. After a little trial and error, I decided to put the shaft of the mirror in between the cables, this appeared not to move the cables or show any resistance.
Again, screw them up until they are firm, but not too tight to allow final adjustment and fitment.
Step 5: Adjust mirrors and tighten bolts:
Don't forget about your left-side indicator, tighten that up too!
Once mirrors are in place, ensure your mirrors are in their prime position (especially against blind-spot clothes dryers)
And that's it! Flip-mirror modiciation complete!
I hope this has been of some assistance to Iron 883 owners. Again, my apologies for the simplicity of the DIY - but this is something owners should be doing to save that little bit of dought, it's simply too easy to let someone else do it for you
Ride safe!
