Anyone fitted the sprocket shaft oil seal without having to use the HD or aftermarket special tools to fit it? 

If I need to I could make some kind of tool similar to the HD one to press it in.

 

I’m also stuck on which way around this seal goes, as the shop manual says to install the seal with the writing facing outward, but there is no lettering at all.

The high side of the lip would go in first to stop the oil getting out. The hollow side of the seal should go in first with the solid side facing out. Ive seen a few double lipped seals that go in the same way. Anything square the same size as the seal will push in in with no problems.

 Thanks Hogbag. The seal  I have (HD pn 12068), is double lipped, to stop the oil from either direction mixing I would think. 

I assume the seal ends up flush in its installed position in the crank case.

07 manual states
lubricate O.D of new lip seal with clean H-D 20W50 engine oil. With the lip garter spring side (also stamped oil side) facing the bearing, press lip seal into bore until outer edge is flush with machined surface of the casting. to avoid seal damage, be sure to use a suitable driver that pressers squarely on the outer edge of the seal carrier. Verify that lip is square in the bore and completely seated around its circumference. lubricate the bearing and lip seal with multy perpose grease or HD-engine oil

 Thanks HogBag, my '07 soft tail manual only shows a picture of the installer mounted to the sprocket shaft. Instuctions say,

14. See Figure 3-73. Install new oil seal into bearing bore. Obtain pilot adapter, pilot shaft , short collar, Nice bear-

ing, large flat washer and handle from SPROCKET SHAFT BEARING TOOL (Part No. HD-97225-55C) .

a. Thread pilot adapter into sprocket shaft.

b. Thread pilot shaft onto pilot adapter.

c. Verify that lip garter spring is in place on both sides of oil seal.

d. Thread pilot onto sprocket shaft until contact is made with shoulder .

e. With the lettering facing outside , slide oil seal over pilot until it contacts bearing bore.

f. Set SPROCKET SHAFT OIL SEAL INSTALLER (1) (Part No. HD-39361-B) over pilot until it contacts oil seal.

g. Slide Nice bearing and large flat washer over pilot until contact is made with seal installer.

h. Thread handle onto pilot shaft.

i. Rotate handle in a clockwise direction until oil seal installer makes firm contact with crankcase stator mount.

j. Remove handle, flat washer , Nice bearing , seal installer and pilot from sprocket shaft .
