Keld, I have the manuals for my bike, on the computer and on my Kobo ebook ( easier to take on a ride). But service manuals often have you looking at things that never need looking at , and miss telling you to look at that do.
My history on dirt bikes and competing taught me that. My old KDX175 needed the swing arm pivot bolt retorqued every weekend, bearings cleaned every 3 meetings and pivot bolt and bearings replaced every season. But according to the manual, the pivot bolt and bearings were ' check for unusual noises, replace bearings if any grating noise or excessive resistance was felt. Taught me the manuals were a starting point only.
Basically, I was asking for those that have been servicing and using HDs fro a while for an idea of what they believe needs checking besides the normal bike things . HDs are not that complex, but like anything I get in or on, I prefer to have it in good and safe nick.

as always it pays to read the mannual but hands on is best you get to know your bike an thats whete it stops i spose
thats why when someone says their bikes not right ya need to ask that many questions because if ya dont theres a good chance ya may miss wat their tryin to tell ya as i said they know their bike an mechs dont (they only know their bike as well an they only know the bikes on a few hour basis if that ) bit like whenya in hosp for a while treat nurses better than doc cause ya see the doc for 5 mins an the nurses for 8hrs plus a day
ok when i do a major or just a service first things i check are basics .a bike or car needs to stop so i do all the brakes check pads or shoes an all cylinders fluids an check for leaks an double check all mounts ect then it needs to start so check all conections startin from the bars an work back double check under the seat an infront of rear lower guard ect at that point i change all oils .normally ill pull primary off an cam cover and have a bowpeep an check wear on movin parts ect them put together again and top all oils ect plus filter of course then it needs to go round cnrs ...so i check all wheel bearings steerin head an swing arm also check shocks an then move jack to front lift off deck check all front an dump fork oils an change (always ask wat type ridein owner does sometimes need to up the grade of oil to stiffen up a lil bit )
as i said i work on STOP START and GO ROUND CNRS ya cant go wriong an it gives ya a method to follow and unlike others here im not worried to say i charge between 40 to 50 hr an most times i throw in few lil extras for free like if somethings bit shitty lookin ill re powdercoat ti or like chocos i had some nice smaller indicators an thrweew em on for free

Can't complain about my dealer, he hasn't tried to bend me over any more than anyone else. I can walk in, he knows my name, what I ride, and any mods that have been done to the bike. He doesn't question it when I bring it in after doing my own work. Better than most motor mechanics I've had for any of my cars.

    G'day Piglet,

I can recommend Capital HD.  The salesman Trev is a top bloke. They have a pretty handy online shop too. First service still bloody expensive but I knew it going in.  Good luck, mate.
