Hope this will apply for NSW as well, filtering or lane splitting or what ever one calls it, I have also done it for many years. If you have a motorcycle you should be able to do this without any problems providing you do it as safely as one can do so. There may be variables with car drivers getting annoyed and maybe blocking you so you cant do so but keep a cool head I know its not possible at times but we all should be able share the road and have courtesy with other road users.
Some car drivers will have to harden up or get a bike if they are really pissed off, motorcyclists pay high rego and CTP (well in NSW we do) not real sure what the other states pay, we don't take up as much space on the roads as cars, also we don't damage the road as much as cars, buses and trucks.
I understand it's a 'grey area' here in Qld. Going up the left of the cars or travelling in the breakdown lanes is a chargeable offense but changing lanes (splitting/filtering) is not. Except if you damage a vehicle - and then it becomes the grey area thing once more.
Amen to that ... i'm not a serial lane splitter, probly cause i rarely visit the big smoke on the bike, but yeah i do it on the odd occasion .... ie: last years Bello ride i think i woulda been an hour late to the meeting point if i didnt ride along the road shoulder, dont understand why cage drivers get so upset, if they could do it they would ...... later in the day there was road works with about a 3km line up, we rode up the left side to the front, half the pack squeezed in front of the l/cruiser and jayco which was parked at the front, the rest of us packed tightly around the side of him, this clown was not happy, as soon as the lollie pop turned he took off at full noise regardless, which of course split the pack, even though we was cruising on 110 -120 he kept right up the arse of the bikes in front so we couldnt re-pack, and stayed there for as long as possible, which was along way. Just one little story i thought i'd share lol.
I use to be a bit dubious about it until Sgt BMW Plodd past me through traffic about 15 years ago, so I lane filtered behind him. Nothing he could say and he wasn't particarly worried either. Since then I've done it and never been picked on it.
